Private Christmas Markets Walking Tour Vienna

Description
From mid-November to New Year's Eve, Vienna’s prettiest squares transform into magical Christmas markets. The generously illuminated monumental buildings along the Ring make a fabulous backdrop and the aroma of Christmas bakery items and hot punch creates a pre-Christmas atmosphere. Snack on cream-filled pastries, candied fruit, roasted chestnuts, and Weihnachtspunsch (a spiced "Christmas punch" of wine, brandy, or schnapps sweetened with warm fruit juices). Located on almost every corner of the city, there’s a wealth of market huts to browse with the largest marker in front of the impressive City Hall. Get in the holiday spirit on this 2.5-hour walking tour of Vienna’s Christmas Markets in some of the city’s most picturesque squares.

Itinerary
The Art Mart in front of spectacularly illuminated St. Charles’ church is full of crafted gifts, traditional foods and a playground for kids.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral is surrounded by a market that features typical Viennese things like snow-globes. The fragrances of Christmas are all around.
Kohlmarkt and Graben are part of Vienna’s “Golden Quarter”. The cities most famous coffee-roster “Julius Meinl” and the most famous pastry maker “Demel” stand out against all the luxury shops.
St. Michael’s Gate is the most impressive access to the Hofburg Palace, center of power for more than seven hundred years.
Here the iconic “Speckstandl” stands out – sausages, hams, bacon and hearty bites and all the treasures of a smoke house.
The “Old Vienna Christmas Market” at Freyung is for many the most atmospheric one in town. Surrounded by some of the most impressive family palais, the square still has the charm of an old market square.
Ferstel Passage is a kind of a “culinary biotope” offering roman style hams, a French Mediterranean bistro, chocolatier-crafted chocolates and the delights of one of the cities best Coffeehouses, “Café Central”.
The tour ends at Vienna’s most spectacular Christmas Market which fills the whole area and park in front of illuminated City Hall. The nearby “Café Landtmann” was Sigmund Freuds favorite and still is among the best when it comes to quality and service. – You could plan dinner here!

Brigitte was such a delight when touring us around the Christmas markets in Vienna. She was very knowledgeable and we appreciated her little tidbits of history throughout the night. She was very engaging and personable. Not many tour guides care to ask for the individual names of their clients, but Brigitte made sure that was the first thing she found out when she met us! She was very patient while we were walking and we aren’t used to walking in Vienna’s winter weather, so it was nice to feel like we weren’t being rushed around. Brigitte is aware that some of Vienna’s sights and happenings are being catered to the increased tourism in the city, so she made sure to show us and bring us to places that exhibited the authenticity of Viennese way of life. Before leaving us for the night, Brigitte made sure to give us specific directions for the quickest route back to our AirBnB where she met us. Would definitely recommend for future tours!!
Liane, thank you for sharing such thoughtful feedback about your evening at Vienna’s Christmas markets. Brigitte takes great care to combine clear historical insight with an authentic sense of local life, and it’s wonderful to hear that her attentive, personal approach added to your experience. She values creating a relaxed pace, especially in winter, and ensuring guests feel oriented and well looked after. We appreciate your recommendation and are glad the tour offered a genuine introduction to Vienna’s seasonal traditions.
Great way to see several Christmas markets in Vienna as well as hear some history and see the sights. Walter was a great guide! Definitely recommend!
Kelly, thank you for joining me on a Christmas market walk in Vienna. Even when the weather is less cooperative, it’s a pleasure to introduce the city at this time of year, when the lights, markets, and traditions create a very special atmosphere. I’m glad you enjoyed the mix of history, sights, and seasonal flair. Your recommendation is much appreciated.
Travelers should know that this tour is much better and deeper than a simple Christmas Market tour. Walter is a scholarly tour guide who took us to numerous Christmas Markets, big and small; public and remote; old and newer. He shared concepts about Paris architecture, politics, culture, international influences, food, city government and infrastructure. We loved every minute and will book again next year. Best tour of our trip!
Kerry, thank you for this wonderful review! It is a true privilege to welcome guests to Vienna during the season of festive lights, when the city’s traditions and stories shine brightest. Our tours are most rewarding at the start of a stay, weaving together history, anecdotes, and sparkling surprises in one evening stroll. I’m delighted you felt the depth and variety of the experience. Vienna shines differently in every season—spring, summer, or fall—and each brings its own charm. We’re thrilled at the thought of welcoming you back soon!
