Itinerary
It’s time to fuel up for the day ahead, and what better way than a deep-fried, Portuguese donut, known as a malasada? We’ll guide you to Leonard’s Bakery, one of Oahu’s most famous spots for these delicious treats. Leonard’s features eight different types of malasadas from its original that’s coated in sugar to custard-stuffed varieties filled with flavors like haupia (coconut), guava, and macadamia nut. There’s usually a line, but don’t let that deter you -- it moves pretty fast.
This 24-acre garden is steeped in history. The original Moanalua Gardens was located at a different site, but dates back over a century! When the gardens were moved to their current location structures from the original were preserved and transported to the gardens you’ll visit today. The gardens are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and charge $10 admission for non-resident adults and $7 for children 6-12.
Need a quick cup of joe for the day ahead? Stop by Green World Coffee. This shop has a cafe where you can grab a to-go cup. While you’re there check out the shop for its wide variety of coffees using beans from different farms across Hawaii. They also offer free samples of coffee, tea, and chocolate--as well as free tours of their coffee farm. Green World Coffee is open Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday - Sunday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Enjoyable activities and best attractions for the entire family, including the Pineapple Express Train Tour & the Plantation Garden Tour
Visit Oahu's laid-back surf town, Haleiwa
Check out the all-natural Hawaiian Bath and Body hand-crafted skincare products made locally right on the North Shore. The factory is located at the historic Wailua Sugar Mill. One of the best parts? The guided tour of the factory (paid) will show you how the soap is mixed, swirled, cut, and boxed! Call ahead to make reservations. The soap factory is open daily until 4pm.
Dating back to the early 1950’s this dessert spot serves up Hawaiian shave ice in dozens of flavors! It’s a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. There will most likely be a long line, but don’t let that stop you -- it moves fast. Or--cross the road and check out Aoki's Shave Ice, another local favorite.
Also known as Turtle Beach, this little beach is a natural feeding ground for honu or sea turtles. This beach tends to get crowded and parking is extremely limited. If you can’t find a spot, just keep driving down the road. If you do stop at the beach, be careful while crossing the road from the small parking area and please be mindful to keep your distance from these protected animals. Getting too close to sea turtles will result in a large fine.
Waimea Bay is an exhibition playground for big-wave riders, including Hawaiian surfing legends
Now, we’ll take you to one of our favorite hidden gems on Oahu. You’ll drive up an unassuming road until you reach Pu’u o Mahuka Heiau. This National Historic Landmark might look like nothing more than a series of rock walls, but over 250 years ago, it was a major temple in Oahu. Learn about this heiau and see artist depictions of what it must have looked like from the informational displays near the parking lot. Please remember that a heiau is a sacred place of great cultural and historic significance and should be respected as such.
Check out one of the "Top Twelve Shore Dives in the World"
See some of the biggest, heaviest waves on the planet!
Visit a famous North Shore beach famous for big wave surfing during the winter season
At this point you might be hungry for some lunch, but can we suggest some pre-lunch dessert? You’re on vacation, right? We’re about to visit some great food trucks, but first, we’ll stop at Ted’s Bakery for some famous cream pies. The specialty is their chocolate haupia, but they also have strawberry guava, blueberry, and pineapple macadamia nut, just to name a few! If you did want to grab some lunch, Ted’s also has burgers, plate lunches, and sandwiches.
Park at Kahuku Fruit Stand and walk across the street to find a pathway that will take you to Kawela Bay -- a picturesque beach with banyan trees, soft sand, and turquoise waters.
Unassuming food truck offering a range of shrimp & local seafood, fried or steamed
On our way to the next stop, we’ll quickly drive by La'ie Temple. No need to get out of the car, just listen as we tell you the story of this site that was designed after King Solomon’s temple described in the Bible. With its gleaming white finish, the temple is dubbed the “Taj Mahal of the Pacific.” Here you’ll find a visitor center with clean restrooms if you want to make a pit stop.
Stop for a quick view of a breathtaking sea arch at La'ie Point. As waves crash below, you’ll see just how this magnificent geologic wonder was formed! See if you can spot the lizard from the story that the tour describes.
The Polynesian Cultural Center is one of Oahu’s most visited attractions. It features island villages that represent six Polynesian islands: Hawaii Tahiti Samoa Fiji Tonga, and Aotearoa (New Zealand) The center also has a luau, night show, and marketplace. Please note: A visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center is a full-day excursion. We recommend you stop by to check out the marketplace and come back another day if you’d like to do the activities.
Go for a quiet beach walk at Kahana Bay, a gorgeous spot without any crowds. There’s also a public restroom if you need a bathroom break.
Visit an incredible private nature reserve that has been the scene for a multitude of Hollywood movies and television shows.
Pull into Kualoa Regional Park for a stunning view of Mokoli'i Island. Known for years by its nickname, Chinaman's Hat, the cone-shaped island is a well-recognized landmark on the Windward side. This is just a quick stop for the view, but if you’re looking for some more adventure, you can come back another day with a kayak and paddle out and explore the island.
Visit a temple built for commemorating the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaiʻi
Now we’ll begin to make our way back to Waikiki with more stories about Oahu’s rich history along the way! When you’re in Hawaii, we ask that you act respectfully toward the locals, land, and wildlife. Please pick up your trash; never touch any marine life, plants, or other animals; and avoid unsafe spots. Hawaii’s natural resources are precious, and it’s up to all of us to help preserve these resources.

1. Rather than adding informational commentary or local stories about the area you're visiting, they play music. I can play whatever music I want in my car. Use some local music to introduce a new chapter but don't play long stretches of music when you could be adding interesting stories and information. 2. The narrator cannot make up his mind which accent to use and jumps back and forth between what we figured were three different accents; why can't he just speak naturally! 3. The narrator does have a nice voice for audio but we could have done without all the jokes and what he thought were funny comments. Not everybody shares the same sense of humour. 4. Biggest disappointment is they said the tour could go clockwise or counter-clockwise but then gave no instructions as to how to use it counter-clockwise. We tried everything and couldn't reach the help desk while we were on the tour so we had to re-arrange our day and go clock-wise. 5. They need to update their information as to the open hours of various locations so you don't pull into a spot only to find it's closed at that time or that day. We did a Road to Hana tour years ago with another company and they were far more thorough, giving lots more location highlights and lots more local stories and information about the area.
Aloha Wayne, Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. On the route direction, the Legendary North Shore Tour is designed to run clockwise only. If you were looking to travel counter-clockwise, that would be the Grand Circle Island Tour instead. That’s also why many travelers choose the Oʻahu bundle, it includes all six tours and allows you to switch routes depending on your plans. Regarding music, narration style, and humor, that balance is intentional but it won’t land the same for everyone. Your preference for more continuous local storytelling is noted. We’re always refining pacing and content. Hours and closures can change quickly on Oʻahu, but keeping that information current is important to us. We appreciate the thoughtful comparison and specifics. That helps. Mahalo for sharing your perspective 🤙
Concise, helpful and full of options to stop and explore as much as we wanted! We had an incredible day exploring North Shore Oahu! Would definitely use again! Thanks Shaka!
Mahalo! 🤙 We’re so glad you enjoyed exploring North Shore Oahu at your own pace. Can’t wait to guide you on your next adventure! 🌺
We started at Ko olina - The directions did not line up with the gentleman speaking on the self guide tour. We literally returned to the starting point 4 different times- to try to get on the right path. For example we never got on H2, when the tour said we would be on three lanes we were on two, when we exited number 3 for the botanical garden there wasn’t one- because we were not on the right freeway to begin with. The other drawback is the Ko Olina starting point isn’t the beginning of the tour and no where is that stated. It is a great idea - but unfortunately it just didn’t work for us.
Thank you for your detailed feedback, and we're sorry to hear about the confusing experience you had with the Ko Olina start point and the directions not aligning. We understand how frustrating it must have been to circle back multiple times trying to find the right path. We appreciate you sharing these specific issues about freeway exits and unclear starting points — this helps us identify areas that need improvement. We'll be passing your comments to our content and tech teams to ensure clearer instructions and better navigation alignment in future updates. We truly want the app to enhance every journey, and we’re sorry it didn’t work out for you this time. Please email us your tour purchase receipt to assist you with a refund.
Awesome Tour! With the GPS guided tours pointing out great spots along the way, it felt like we had our private tour guide with us! This is the best valued and in-depth tour
Aloha! Thank you so much for your enthusiastic feedback. We’re thrilled our GPS-guided tour felt like having your own private guide and delivered excellent value and depth. Enjoy planning your next adventure, and we can’t wait to guide you again soon! Mahalo!
Not very user friendly. It would just stop giving directions and you end up getting lost. Ended up just using Google maps.
Mahalo for providing your valuable feedback. We're sorry to hear you seem to have not enjoyed your Shaka Guide tour. We liked how the tour always told us the places worth seeing so we knew where and when to stop. The music really added a nice touch.
Thank you for your kind words! We're thrilled to have you as a satisfied user of our app, and we look forward to continuing to serve you in the future.
Wow - this really didn't read clearly to me and I paid for 5 "island tours" not realising they were audio tours and i couldve just got 1. Bit peeved tbh
Aloha and we're sorry to hear there seems to be some confusion. Kindly email us at aloha@shakaguide.com so we can help you request for a refund from Viator/TripAdvisor for your booking.
Mahalo for the best tour during my 9 day trip in Hawaii! The gps worked perfectly and I never missed any navigation instructions! The narration was not only informative, but also very funny! And, the music while driving had me doing a lil luau in my car! I did have my doubts when I was instructed to park, then walk across the road to see if I could spot turtles. I followed the path and there were the turtles swimming right by the shore! The host also gives the option of either stopping or continuing on your drive! The views were magnificent and will never forget how fun it was doing this drive!
This was an EXCELLENT audio tour. The narration was entertaining and informative and the directions were spot on. We only had a 4 hour window and this tour allowed us to see some of the key places we wanted to visit (Bonzai Pipeline) as well as some hidden gems we weren’t even aware of (filming site from Jurassic Park helicopter scene). This was the best of both worlds because you could enjoy the island at your own pace, but had the knowledge of an experienced guide at the same time.
Mahalo for your review! Don't forget to tell all your friends about it and follow us on social media @shakaguide to share your Shaka Guide experience 🤙😍🤙
