Description

Are you someone who enjoys nature and hiking? If so, let's discover the Southern Ridges, a series of hills and parks that connect Kent Ridge Park, Hort Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Mount Faber Park, and Labrador Nature Reserve. During this excursion, we will trek to the Henderson Waves, a pedestrian bridge that spans a deep valley 36 meters beneath. We will then proceed to Faber Point, the highest point in Mount Faber Park. From the observation areas there, we will have a panoramic vista of the city, the southern region of Singapore, and the southern islands. Learn also about the everyday life of an average Singaporean and the development of Singapore's housing and maritime industries. This hike takes you through a secondary forest with a diverse variety of flora and fauna. As we walk along the treetops, be on the lookout for the oriental whip snake basking on the branches, the cicada's call, or the straw-headed bulbul's song. This journey is definitely a nature lover's paradise!

Itinerary

20 min

Traverse on an elevated bridge that cuts through the adinandra belukar, a distinct type of secondary forest where the forest regenerates after exhaustive agriculture exploitation. Look out for the rich flora and fauna, such as the straw headed bulbul, the weaver ant nest or the oriental whip snake, among the tree canopy. I will also share with you the types of wildlife that can be found in Singapore.

20 min

The Terrace Garden is made up of a series of semi-circular terraces situated at the top of Telok Blangah Hill. From here, you will be able to enjoy a breath-taking 360-degree view of Singapore. If you are lucky, we might be able to see a sea of pink bougainvillea bloom.

20 min

The Henderson Waves is a pedestrian bridge that spans across a deep valley 36 metres below. The unique wave-like design of the Henderson Waves makes for an unusual sight and a famous photo spot.

20 min

Faber Point is the highest point on Mount Faber. From the lookout points here, we will have a panoramic view of the city, the southern part of Singapore and the southern islands. If the weather is good, we will be able to see Marina Bay Sands from afar! From these lookout points, I will also share about the life of average Singaporean, the development of Singapore’s housing and the importance of the maritime industry to Singapore.

Highly recommended

Was an amazing tour, our tour guide was Keith and he was very friendly and very patient. Always waited for us to catch up when we were going up the stairs. He was also very informative about plants and trees we passed. Absolutely recommend anyone taking this tour with Keith! He is the best!!,

Fantastic morning to hike the Southern Ridges! Keith was happy to spot the common hill mynah and thanks to Jill, the bronzeback snake. Peter and Jill are a lovely jovial couple. Enjoy your stay in Singapore :)

Beautiful scenic and informative walk

Keith our guide was very informative and helpful. He ensured we were happy with the pace and we had a few rest stops. We learnt about lots of seeds and products

Operator response

Fine day for a walk in the Southern Ridges. Keith was happy to spot not one, but two of our native green crested lizard together with you! And also the greater racket-tailed drongo. Julie and Paul are polite and happy to share their stories. Take care and safe flight home :)

Hort Park tour with guide Keith

Keith was a fabulous guide - very passionate and, as a Singapore local, very happy to share his knowledge of local life and culture, as well as the plant life we saw along the way. I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone keen to see the green and largely unseen part of Singapore that lies so close to the centre. A reasonable degree of fitness is a prerequisite. While Keith takes plenty of time to stop and explain things along the way, getting up Mt Faber takes some energy!

Operator response

Fantastic weather for a walk in the southern ridges! Keith enjoyed sharing about the local flora and fauna, and the 'toothpick' story on one of the palm tree. Wendy and Martin were polite and friendly guests! Take care and hope to see you again :)

A great opportunity to explore a different side of Singapore that's is a bit more of the beaten tourist track

This is a very well organised trip and Keith, our guide, provided very professional and clear communication via Whats App prior to the event, even adjusting the start from 8:30am to 9:30 am to accommodate our request due to our jetlag. The starting point at Hort Park office is easily reached by taxi for a reasonable price. On the morning of our walk the heavens opened and it started to rain heavily but this did not dampen our experience as Keith was really enthusiastic and professional and talked to us about a whole range of life, history and culture in Singapore. The walk itself is easy but there are some steep bits and some steps to navigate so should be borne in mind by those with mobility needs. The walk enabled us to see the nature that surrounds the city and when we reached the top of Mount Faber this afforded us with a brilliant view. Fortunately the rain had stopped at this point so we could see for miles. Keith was really entertaining and had a great sense of humour. He speaks really good English and was also very interested in what's happening around the world so we enjoyed good overall conversation as well as learning lots about the Singaporean way of life. Along the way he invited us to taste local produce from the area, including the notorious Durian fruit which has a very specific smell and taste and is not for the faint hearted! The end of the walk is located at the Mount Faber cable car station and I had booked a separate ticket for the cable car in order to combine the end of the walk with a trip over to Sentosa Island. I would recommend this combination to make a full day. Keith showed us the entrance to the station which was very kind. Thankyou Keith for being a great guide. A perfect way to amble away a rainy Sunday morning in Singapore.

A wet morning hike and glad you survived it, Julia & Paul! The intermittent rain was not part of the package but provided Keith the chance to share with you other topics on Singapore! He had fun learning of Lake District (pretty photos) from you as well. Take care and hope to see you again :)

Lush and tranquil

Keith our local guide walked us through Hort Park , Henderson Wave Bridge and Mt Faber look out at a comfortable scenic pace. Keith was able to inform and answer our questions regarding the trees and plant growth, history of the area and knew where to take some lovely memorable photos along our walk. Not to mention a great local coffee cafe at the end of our tour that made a perfect latte coffee. Thank you. 5/5

Operator response
