Itinerary
Montserrat is a mountain top monastery situated on top of an unusual rock mountain. It is the highest point of the Catalan lowlands. Montserrat monastery hosts “la Moreneta”, also called Black Madonna. The legend says that the benedictine monks found the statue, and they could not move the statue to build their monastery, so they decided to construct it around the statue. Montserrat was designated as a National Park in 1987. Nowadays, it is a site of pilgrimage for people around the world. Once in Montserrat, enjoy a 45-minute small group guided tour, and then you will have 2 hours to explore on your own. You can visit the Museum, taste the monastery’s homemade liquor, go for an easy walk to Saint Miguel's cross for an incredible viewpoint, go up the Sant Joan Funicular, take wonderful pictures, buy local products from the farmer's market, and more.
The origin of the monastery is uncertain, but it is believed that the Virgin of Monsterrat (La Moreneta) was found around 880. (8.30 am and 1.30 pm tours include tickets to La Moreneta). According to the legends, the monks built the monastery around the statue. The monastery still functions to this day with over 70 monks. The basilica of Montserrat began its construction in the 16th century, and now houses an art museum. It is also the place where la Escolania, one of the oldest Boys’ Choirs in Europe, performs during religious ceremonies (you can listen to them on the 9.30 am tour).
In your free time, you can visit the Montserrat museum, which hosts six permanent art collections and two temporary. You will find pieces from famous artists such as Picasso, Dalí, Caravaggio, and also unknown but talented artists.
In your free time, take the funicular and enjoy the panoramic view of the mountain. The funicular offers a view of the monastery as well as the breathtaking views from the Pyrenees. At the top, you can also visit Aula de Natura (Nature Centre), where you will learn about the history, flora and fauna of the mountain.
The Black Madonna of Montserrat, a revered 12th‑century statue of the Virgin Mary and symbol of Catalonia, is housed inside the Montserrat Basilica. Included in the option that specifies the visit to the Black Madonna.

Absolutely fantastic day trip from Barcelona. Montserrat was one of the highlights of my trip. The scenery was incredible and the views from the mountain were worth every step. The tour was well organised, easy to follow, and the guide was friendly, knowledgeable and engaging throughout the experience. The information provided during the tour helped me appreciate the history and significance of the area while still giving enough free time to explore and enjoy the views at my own pace. I even had enough time during the free period to hike up to the cross and take in some unforgettable views over the mountains. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I would happily recommend Barcelona Local Experiences to other travellers visiting Barcelona. Thank you for a great day. Jason
we had initially booked a tour to Simone, Sierra and the boys choir, but they changed the tour at the last minute to no boys choir, but yes, with the black Madonna. And they did not inform me that the time of the tour had changed to an hour earlier. So we missed our tour, and they said there was nothing they could do.
Very kind friendly and knowledgeable tour guides! Amazing history and scenery!! A must do in Spain! Thank you Uri and Carol!
Hola Janna! Thanks so much for your feedback, and we are glad you had such a good time with your guides. Sounds like they made the day enjoyable with their knowledge, friendliness, and the way they shared the history and views along the way. Hope we can host you again on another tour!
Excellent trip. Tour size was small enough we could hear our guide who was funny and knowledgeable. Very interestinghistory. We had plenty of time to tour on our own after we walked through the monastery together. Beautiful place.
Hola Erin! Thanks for the feedback! Really glad you enjoyed the trip. Great to hear the small group made it easy to follow the guide and that his humor and knowledge added to the experience. Nice that you also had time to explore the monastery on your own. Sounds like a great visit! Thanks again for joining us!
Lovely way to spend an afternoon. Not too long travelling and enough time in Monserrat to experience the place.
Great half day trip to Montserrat. Francesco was terrific - lots of interesting information on the trip up and when we arrived at Montserrat. Highly recommend taking this tour.
Rocco was an exceptional tour guide for our trip to Spain during the monsoon season. He provided us with a fascinating history lesson on our way to the location and led us on an incredible tour of the city site.
We booked our tour with Roco and was worth every dollar. If you love learning I would highly recommend you book with Roco. My gf and I learned so much from this trip. Thanks Roco!
Great tour with our guide, Rocco. Exactly as advertised. Short basilica tour with plenty free time to explore the mountain and surroundings.
Rocco was a good tour guide . Explain everything and a lot of trivia and learn a lot of about Montserrat. And everything was exact on time
