I went to Mauthausen. And even though I returned, a part of me remained there, behind those barbed wires that cut the sky like scars. I walked where 190,000 souls have walked. I closed my eyes and felt the mud, the hunger, the dry sound of pickaxes on the "Stairs of Death." But I could not truly imagine that horror, because it can only be endured on one's own skin. Looking at the photos, the gas chambers, the crematoria, I asked myself: "Where was God?" How could He remain silent? But soon after, I understood that the truest question is another: "What kind of monster is man then?" The problem is not the absence of God. It is the presence of the executioner. True demons do not reside in hell: they are in well-furnished living rooms, in offices, wearing elegant uniforms. In the morning, they select who lives and who dies; in the evening, they return home and pet the dog. I feel anger. Against the executioners of yesterday and against those of today: against anyone who crushes the weaker. At Mauthausen, I understood that God was not there. But we were. And if God is silent, it is up to me, to us, to fill that silence. Not with prayers, but with actions. I will remember. Always. Because those who forget are condemned to repeat. Their cry will live in my anger, and my anger will be my memory. And every day, memory will be my trench.
We passed a very good day. Audio guide in french langage was very appréciâte. The driver was very genthel and he drove with security
This is relevant history no matter what year it is. There is ALWAYS people trying to control others and we haven't learned yet.
It's one of those places where you never know whether to read as much as possible or just wander around trying to absorb the memories that come from things. So much so that you come out a little different than you entered.
No service ! They left us behind after our taxi was stuck in road traffic being 5 min late! We attempted to call on numerous occasions only to find an answering machine. None of our money was refunded not even a quater.!!!!! Please consider using another tour! as our tour the very next day to Budapest waiting for an elderly couple for almost 30 min !!! They finally made contact with us and made every excuse in the book why they left. Being tourist in Vienna we felt very vulnerable and completely taken for a ride . I would highly recommend you NOT use these tours. We came all the way to Vienna especially to go to Mauthasen . You are welcome to inbox me as I have all the proof from taxi receipts etc I also have my attempted phone calls all recorded. stephaniecrssly@yahoo.com Horrible experience
Hello Stephanie, thanks for your feedback. It is unfortunate that you were stuck in traffic and missed your tour but this is clearly beyond our control. We advise all our guests to check-in at the tour meeting point 15 minutes before tour departure. We tried calling you on your cell phone several times without success. The group waited for you and finally left 7 minutes late. We would be happy to have you on the tour on another occasion. Kind regards! Ulrich & the Vienna à la carte team
The juxtaposition of this concentration camp and its grizzly recent history set in the spectacular Austrian countryside on a beautiful Spring day highlights how human beings are, and always have been, the problem. This tour is not to be be taken lightly but rather reflectively. The small group nature is very appropriate and the tour guide Ben gave the overall experience the added color and interest that meant the day was memorable in so many respects
We booked the Mauthausen Memorial trip and Ulrich was our guide. He was knowledgeable on the history of the camp and had videos prepped for us to view en route to the memorial. Additionally, our group had 3 senior citizens, and one experienced difficulties at the Memorial. Ulrich stayed with her to make sure she was comfortable and made arrangements to help the rest of the group get the best information from this memorial. He really went above and beyond a normal tour guide. Outstanding service all around.
Hi 512marthah, thank you so much for your positive review. We'll gladly forward your praise to Ulrich. It is most important to us to provide an extraordinary experience and we expect our tour guides to go above and beyond for our guests! "Normal" would not be good enough for us :) We'd be glad to welcome you back to Vienna some day! Kind regards Marlies & the Vienna à la carte Team
A very enlightening day. Tom, our guide, was superb. From the moment we got into the car we learnt so much from him. He was easy to listen to, very well informed and really made the difference to our trip. We would definitely recommend this tour and all the more so if Tom was leading it. The Stewart family
