Itinerary
A true fairy tale in a green paradise that starts in the Queimadas’ house. Until you reach the majestic waterfall, the path is remarkably green. Along the way you have a magnificent view over the village of São Jorge and the great mountains. The water is always present along the walk. You can see the water gushing from the walls, flowing on the levada and falling from the sky on raining days. It’s a fantastic trail and safe all year long. You will find some tunnels along the way so do not forget your flashlight and protect your head. Arriving at Caldeirão Verde, immerse yourself by the breathtaking view of the huge waterfall falling on the cold and crystalline lagoon. Make a picnic before you go, while enjoying the relaxing sound of water falling.

Great walk with great guide. Sara was full of information and advice on the walk. She also tended to my minor first aid needs having had an argument with a large tree branch! She’s a credit to Lido Tours!
Liana the guide was great, and Luis the driver too. We did a short stop in Santana for grocery and washrooms before the hike. The hike itself was easy, but very muddy.
Highly recommended. Hiking for all ages. Simple walk. Under the fresh trees
Interesting hike was made a little less enjoyable due to the large number of people. We got there early to try to avoid crowds but ended up spending a significant portion of the hike either letting faster hikers or completely uncourteous trail runners through, or having to figure out how to step aside to make room for people coming the other way. There are many points on the hike where this was dangerous, as there were spots where the path was extremely narrow, and the flimsy cable hand rails were anything but reassuring. All of this would have been more tolerable if the end goal (the Caldera) hadn’t been a bit underwhelming. Jut too many people. If we were to return to Madeira I would definitely choose a lesser known Levada.
It was a lovely guided walk. A bit dangerous at times with the sheer drops, not suitable for anyone scared of heights that’s for sure.
Fabulous day out with an excellent guide. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and walking trail. The route took you up to the source of the water and the pathway was not steep. Had to go through 4 tunnels and a torch is needed to see where you are walking. Great fun, would love to try another one.
Overwhelming view. The point of interest at the end of the route is stunning. It's worth the effort. It is advisable to start the route early to count on the return in hours with daylight. I recommend appropriate shoes and a small flashlight.
Interesting, fun, and awesome. Even though I am scared of heights, I am delighted I managed all of the levada walk. The views are breathtaking, and I loved seeing the trout in the waters!
A good 9 mile trail walk. Described by the guide as moderate to difficult but only because of distance and narrowness of trail in parts. Not a difficult walk as it is generally flat but you need to take care under foot due to exposed tree roots and slippery stones at times. Four tunnels on the route and a torch is needed. We went on a Saturday and it was very busy which makes passing at the narrow parts of the route a little tricky as the route takes you out and back along the same path. We went with Lido Tours and it was useful to have a guide who explained a lot about the vegetation en route but walk is easily done without a guide. We stopped for lunch at the waterfall before turning round to head back along the same route. There is a cafe at the start of the route so you can get tea, coffee etc but probably worth taking some food and water with you. A shower proof jacket is recommended and we needed them at the end as there was a slight rain shower.
Great walk led by a friendly host. In the middle of summer the waterfalls were not in full flow but the hike had plenty of beautiful vistas regardless. Note it can get very busy on this route and you often have to pass people on very narrow parts of the levada.
