Itinerary
Vienna’s world-famous Kunsthistorisches Museum is an architectural marvel and is a must-see for any art lover visiting Vienna. The museum developed from the art collections of the House of Habsburg and hosts a unique collection of some of the world’s most famous painters from Raphael and Rembrandt to Vermeer and Rubens and, of course, Peter Breughel the Elder. Skip the line and join no more than 15 guests on a guided tour of two of the museum’s key exhibitions. From Peter Breughel’s “Tower of Babel” to Vermeer’s “The Art of Painting” you will become acquainted with the old masters at the museum’s Picture Gallery. You will also see some of the Museum’s rarest and oddest items at the Kunstkammer exhibit, like the golden “Saliera” by Celini and the “Madonna of Krumau”. After the tour you are free to stay at the museum to explore the remaining exhibits, including those covering ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian art.

The tour operator just cancelled my tour 1 day before its date, even though I have reserved it 2 weeks before. Which affected my whole visit plan. Their reason of cancelation is that I'm the only one who reserved the tour on that day!!! Such an unacceptable/ irresponsible reason to have. I had many tours before which had to be done only for me due to lack of reservations. I even offered to pay double the price to make it close to a private tour price, but they didn't even reply back with a rejection.
Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that the cancellation affected your travel plans and understand your disappointment. As stated in the tour description and booking conditions, this tour requires a minimum of two participants to operate. When it became apparent that the minimum number might not be reached, we contacted you on Wednesday to inform you of the situation. Unfortunately, we did not receive a response. As we still had not reached the required minimum, we informed you on Thursday evening that the tour scheduled for Saturday would need to be cancelled. We appreciate that you later offered to pay an additional amount to operate the tour. However, by the time we received your message on Friday, the cancellation process had already been completed and it was no longer possible to reinstate the tour. We understand that other operators may choose to run tours with very small groups or even a single participant, but this is not always feasible for every tour and operator. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.
This is a great introduction to an amazing and somewhat overwhelming museum. Our guide Christina gave us a history of the musuem itself, gave us an orientation of the vast collection and then took us to see some of her personal favourite pieces. An excellent morning. Make sure to stop afterwards at what could be the worlds most beautiful musuem cafe.
Thank you very much for your lovely review! We’re so happy to hear that Christina helped make your visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum such a great introduction to this incredible collection. It’s wonderful that you enjoyed both the overview of the museum’s history and structure, as well as her personal selection of favourite pieces — that’s exactly the kind of experience we aim to offer. And we couldn’t agree more about the café… it’s definitely up there among the most beautiful museum cafés in the world ☕✨ Thanks again for joining us, and we hope to welcome you back for another cultural morning in Vienna!
The museum is too vast and full to be fully viewed in a single visit. This tour helps distill a visit to a selection of items and paintings whose history really captures Habsburg grandeur and Austria’s historical place within Europe. Our guide’s knowledge and enthusiasm was a highlight, and convinced us to return again in future.
Dieter is a guide extraordinaire! We could not have enjoyed our tour more. He was infinitely knowledgeable, informative, and interesting. He seemed to know every item in the museum! He could take what looked the like the most mundane piece of sculpture or art and, with his brilliant description and background information, turn into something fascinating and even awe-inspiring. The 2:15 we spent with him flew by. We learned so much and saw every piece of art in new, fascinating light. I can't recommend this tour highly enough, especiall if you are lucky enough to have Dieter as your guide.
Thank you so much for this amazing review! We’re absolutely delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your time at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Dieter will be thrilled to read your kind words — he truly has a gift for bringing the artworks to life and turning even the smallest details into something fascinating and memorable. It’s wonderful to know the time flew by and that you left with a whole new appreciation of the collection. Thank you for your strong recommendation, and we hope to welcome you again on another tour soon!
A little big museum to be seen in the period dedicated to the visit, but the guide really made a lot of effort to show the most important points. After a guided tour we can stay to see the airs that she did not take us to see.
The tour helps you to move around the main points and works of the museum, helps you to locate since it is very extensive and sometimes you do not have all day to tour it, I do not remember the name of our guide but she was very sweet and explained everything very clearly and was watching each participant, it is an activity that I would recommend to do without hesitation
This fabulous tour was the best experience we had in Vienna! Our guide had a depth of knowledge that included historical, biographical, artistic techniques and media. He helped us absorb the amazing collections at this museum. Absolutely inspiring and recommended!
Our tour guide was exceptional—both knowledgeable and engaging. She was not only informative but also incredibly patient, especially with the children in our group. She skillfully included them in the discussion and involved them in interactive activities during the tour, even suggesting fun, creative “home” art projects to try afterward. Our group included four adults, with another couple bringing along four children aged 5 to 9. Despite the presence of young kids, the tour was thorough and uncompromised. We received a complete experience of the museum, with no corners cut. The guide provided in-depth explanations of artworks from various time periods, highlighting the evolution of artistic techniques over time and offering insightful comparisons between artists from the same era. Her ability to balance educational depth with an engaging, family-friendly approach made this tour stand out. Highly recommended!
Our guided tour of the Kunsthistorisches Museum was an unforgettable experience. The collection itself is staggering—masterpieces by Caravaggio, Bruegel, Vermeer, and Titian, all housed in a truly magnificent building that feels like a palace of art. What made the experience exceptional, though, was our guide. They brought the artwork to life with compelling stories, insightful context, and a genuine passion for art history. The tour was thoughtfully paced and not rushed, yet never dull. We appreciated how the guide tailored their commentary to our interests, and also gave us a solid overview of the museum’s layout, which helped us explore more on our own afterward. This tour is an absolute must for anyone visiting Vienna who wants more than just a walk through the galleries. It’s an enriching deep dive into centuries of European art and culture, and left us with a much greater appreciation of the Old Masters.
Dietr was a most excellent guide who knew so much about the art and the artists in the Kunsthistorisches. He started the tour early and he provided us with earpieces so we can hear him clearly. We really enjoyed our tour with him and it gave us a nice overview of the museum. He kept things interesting and lively, and he was very kind and let us old folks sit down while he discussed the art pieces. We would highly recommend doing a tour with Dietr.
