The Portuguese legacy of Bengal is still palpable in the heart of Kolkata, but sadly, it is overlooked and not paid the respect it deserves. Astonishing as it may sound, an attempt to murder, or at least a street fracas between two Europeans in colonial Calcutta, indirectly gifted this city a huge edifice — the Portuguese Church of the Sacred Heart of the Jesus. In Calcutta, 1821, near Old Chowringhee Theatre, a man named Luis De Souza openly fired inside a horse carriage, seriously injuring one Joseph Gonsalves. De Souza was arrested and an attempt to murder case was filed against him. Hearing this, his mother began praying for his life and made a resolution to build a church if her prayers were answered. Her son escaped capital punishment, but was imprisoned for a decade. After De Souza was released, she laid the first stone of the church on February 12, 1832. The church was completed in two years and its consecration was held on Easter Sunday, March 30, 1834.

The Tipu Sultan Shahi Mosque (also known as Tipu Sultan Masjid) is a famous mosque in Kolkata, India named after Tipu Sultan the ruler of Mysore. The mosque is a relic of architectural and cultural heritage. The Mosque was built by his 11th son Prince Gholam Mohammed. He was the ruler of Mysore but why his youngest son built this mosque in memory of his father, far away from Mysore here in Calcutta. There is a history behind this. Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the South Indian Deccani Kingdom of Mysore, was engaged in a series of wars with the British East India Company. After the last war, with Tipu's death on the battlefield and six years after Tipu's death, the entire family was exiled to Calcutta by the British Government. During that period the capital of Mysore Srirangapatnam was captured by British Army. Son of Tipu Sultan, Gholam Mohammed was a child when arrived in Calcutta. He was a man of varied qualities.

Adda, Alumni, and East Bengal: Rediscovering Kolkata’s Heartbeat!

Mr. Arif and Haris took me through sights and sounds of central to north Kolkata that I had never truly experienced, despite growing up here and doing my UG at Presi. It was my first purposeful Kolkata tour in 23 years since moving away. The icing on the fun cake—both of them turned out to be Assembly of God alumni and passionate East Bengal supporters! Keep rocking, guys.

Rumbling Back in Time

An enjoyable few hours travelling on the only tram lines still running in Kolkata. An early start whilst the city was just waking up meant there was lots to see without all the traffic. We were given an incredibly generous bag of snack and drinks, so much so that we were still snacking on them over the following week. The trams are pretty much as they would have been when they first started, don’t expect a running commentary though as they are very noisy. They don’t have the ever present horns of the other road users but it took my wife to point out how the driver was ringing his bell. Go while you still can, it’s an experience you will remember.

Operator response

Thanks for the nice review.

Heritage Tram Tour

An enjoyable few hours early morning riding the heritage Kolkata trams. The ride was noisy and bumpy but it was great seeing the city as it woke up. Our hosts provided us with very generous snacks, drinks and some souvenir postcards. Our final stop was at the moving ‘Mother house’ where Mother Teresa had lived.

Operator response

We are honoured for the review. It helps in making the experience better.

Poor experience

It wasn’t value for money. The tram-ride was nice, but the guide didn’t know much about it. The tram-museum is a poor experience. It looked as though he didn’t care much. The subway-ride wasn’t very special. It should have contained something one cannot arrange for one-self. We could have done this ourselves for a fraction of the price.

Operator response

We have noted the shortcomings and will improve on the experience.
