Description

Most visitors leave Kilkenny having seen the buildings but never really understanding the city. This tour changes that. In a relaxed small group (max 15), explore Kilkenny with a guide born and raised here. Starting near Kilkenny Castle, you’ll walk through the Medieval Mile to places like St. Canice’s Cathedral while hearing the stories that shaped the city — invasions, merchants, crime, politics, and everyday life. This is designed to feel conversational rather than scripted. Guests regularly describe the tour as a “great start to our trip” and say it helped the rest of Kilkenny make far more sense afterward. There’s plenty of time for questions, local recommendations, and the kind of insights most visitors would never find on their own. Small groups only (max 15) Local guide born and raised in Kilkenny Story-focused, relaxed experience Starts near Kilkenny Castle Advance booking recommended, especially on weekends.

Let's go walking in Kilkenny

Very informative and historical. Our guide has a very dry sense of humor and blended magnificently that humor with the some of the more stark portions of the tour. Beautiful walk around Kilkenny without taking up the whole day. Would definitely recommend doing this at least once if you are going to visit this fabulous little city. It really set the backdrop for our stay there.

Operator response

Don’t miss this walking tour

Very informative and enjoyable two hour tour with John. John clearly knows the history of Kilkenny from medieval to current times. We leant about present day hurling rivalry, the many bridges and memorials, statues and churches as well as Kilkenny characters that make the city a colourful one.

Operator response

Learn about the past you are walking past!

A very nice small group tour. John took us to places that don’t show up in the must see list of typical YouTube influencers, but tell you about the real city. He took us to a few of the big ticket stops, but also to a few of the small stops like a historic high school, the library, and the WW1 memorial. The small group size also meant that we could talk with John about living in Kilkenny and Ireland while walking between stops.

Hi Marc, Thank you so much for taking the time to write this great review. It was a pleasure to welcome you to Kilkenny. I am delighted that you enjoyed the parts of the city that are often overlooked, and at certain times of the year are far more photogenic than the areas every influencer and his dog publish online. I am also happy that you appreciated being able to have a conversation with me as we go around. Most people are afraid to ask questions in a large group, and I was happy to answer your questions as we went around. I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your time in Ireland. Kind regards John
