Edinburgh’s Master Storytellers, Mercat Tours, are redefining the walking tour, promising to enrich and deepen your connection with Edinburgh’s people and its past far beyond your visit. Take the Story Home: evoke the memories: - Smell the leather and smoke - Touch original artefacts - Listen to the tour playlist A daytime ghost tour for kids full of tales of stinking streets, terrible tortures and ghostly goings-on. Listen to the distant clatter of a horse-drawn carriage as you explore a city built on body snatching and torture. Learn the meaning of gardyloo and hope you never hear it, grimace at the tales of Scottish witches and find out what treasure could be found buried in a 19th century graveyard. You’ll even hear what school children, like you, once packed in their school bags. You’ll finish your tour in our exclusive Blair Street Underground Vaults, once frequented by some of Edinburgh’s less-appealing characters.

Itinerary
To start, you’ll visit the winding closes of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Learn the meaning of gardyloo and hope you never hear it, grimace at the tales of Scottish witches and find out what treasure could be found buried in a 19th century graveyard (clue: it’s not gold and shiny). You’ll even hear what school children, like you, once packed in their school bags on one eventful day.
You’ll hear all about the creepy characters lurking in the past and the hideous real history of how people lived in 19th century Edinburgh. Listen to the distant clatter of a horse-drawn carriage as you explore a city built on witch trials, body snatching and a gruesome past of torture. Your master Storyteller will take you to the places where history lives.
You’ll finish your excursion beneath the streets in our exclusive Blair Street Underground Vaults, once frequented by some of Edinburgh’s less-appealing characters. Maybe you’ll even catch their whispers as you explore…

Our guide, Marina was a great storyteller- she made it pretty awful for both the big and small kids. I had 5 children between the ages of 6 and 15.

A fabulously spooky tour with Nicola who was a great story teller. She made each story come to life and gave my Mum a few frights! We heard some gruesome tales and experienced the underground vaults. We had a really wonderful experience and can recommend it for families with children who enjoy gorey stories.

Brilliant experience - fun for the whole family, although our 8 year old was a bit frightened by the ghost stories. The rest of us loved it! Fabulous guide - we had Nicola and she was great.

Our family selected the kid-friendly “Evening of Ghosts & Ghouls” tour. The audio devices made for easy listening to our guide as we moved through the streets and past other people. Some interesting bits of history were learned from Stef, our knowledgeable and charismatic guide. Our interest only grew as we ventured down into the Vaults to experience a seldom-seen part of Edinburgh. Great tour, and if we do return to the city, we’ll be sure to book Mercat for one of their other tour offerings.
