Itinerary
Begin your tour in this historic neighborhood, the center of Paris’s bohemian life and intellectual exchange, where many Black American artists found community.
Stop by select galleries that highlight the influence of African art on French avant-garde movements and open dialogue about colonial history.
Discover the legendary jazz scene where Black American musicians such as Sidney Bechet and Josephine Baker performed and transformed Parisian nightlife.
Learn about the American literary hub that welcomed Black American writers, fostering creative exchange between Paris and Harlem Renaissance figures.
A year before the Revolution (1788) was founded the Society of the Friends of the Blacks, by two future Revolutionaries, Brissot and Clavière. You can learn about this at the Procope Café, epicenter of the French Revolution.
Delve into the role of the Sorbonne as a key site of the Negritude and pan-African movements. Learn about the First Congress of Black Writers and Artists (1955) and how Paris both empowered and complicated Black identity for Africans and African Americans alike.
Explore the café where James Baldwin lived and wrote, influencing conversations on race and literature in both Europe and America.
Pause in this historic haven for artists and writers. Visit the contemporary slavery memorial sculpture and hear about France’s complex relationship with its colonial past and the long struggle toward abolition and recognition.
Conclude at the historic venue where Josephine Baker captivated audiences and performed her final show. Reflect on her enduring cultural influence and legacy as a symbol of resistance, glamour, and empowerment.
Reflect on the lives of Black figures honored in this national monument, including Josephine Baker, Félix Éboué, and Alexandre Dumas.
Less known artist Beaford Delaney, who largely inspired Baldwin, lived in the Bobino area. A few steps away, Josephine Bakers Square honors her life in Paris.

Amazing! Thank you very much for sharing! The Toorers team
Our tour with Louise was one of the highlights of our time in Paris. She brought the rare combination of deep academic knowledge and lived familiarity with the city itself. As a trained historian who also knows these neighborhoods intimately, she was able to move beyond surface-level storytelling and into real cultural and historical analysis. What made the experience especially meaningful was the nuance. Louise didn’t present “Black Americans in Paris” as a single, simplified narrative. She thoughtfully explored the very different experiences of figures like James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Josephine Baker, and Charles Dumas, contextualizing how identity, sexuality, relationships, fame, politics, and presentation shaped the ways each person moved through Paris and was received there. That level of complexity mattered. She also did not shy away from the contradictions within French society itself — particularly the contrast between how Paris often embraced Black American artists and intellectuals while simultaneously marginalizing people from its own colonies. That broader context gave the tour real intellectual and emotional depth. As a Black woman, I often try to understand where people like me fit within the history of a place when I travel. This tour gave me that opportunity in a way that felt thoughtful, honest, and deeply human. I left feeling both informed and moved. HIGHLY recommend!

Both the tour and our tour guide, Louise, were marvelous. We make a habit of taking a walking tour when we travel to new places, and this one felt extra special because of the specific, important historical storytelling that was woven throughout. It was a treat, too, to learn from Louise, who clearly cares about and is studied in the history of this tour and Paris. We hope to find more tours like this in future travels. Great for those who do and do not know some of the background history!
