Horseback riding to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate in a mixed group begins with a 4:30 am hotel pick-up in Cusco. We travel to Pacchanta (4,100 m / 13,451 ft), at the foot of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, where a warm buffet breakfast prepared by local families awaits us. After breakfast, the guide organizes the horses and provides a brief explanation of the route and safety guidelines. This tour operates as a group service, where we will have both hikers and horseback riders. Everyone shares the same experience, and we move at a group pace. Strategic meeting points are arranged along the route to keep everyone together and ensure safety throughout the journey. We explore Otorongo, Alqacocha, Q’omercocha, Orqo Otorongo, Azulcocha, Pucacocha, and Patacocha, all fed by pristine glacier waters. One of the highlights is the Ninaparayoc Viewpoint, where we enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the lakes and the surrounding peaks of Ausangate.

300 min

After plenty of time for photos and to fully enjoy the breathtaking scenery, we ride or walk back to Pacchanta, where a delicious buffet lunch featuring traditional Andean dishes will be waiting for us. After lunch, you will have approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to relax in the Pacchanta hot springs, naturally heated by the thermal activity of Ausangate. These mineral-rich waters are perfect for soothing your muscles while admiring the impressive mountain views. Since the horseback experience is more relaxed and less physically demanding, travelers usually have more time to unwind, soak comfortably, and enjoy the peaceful Andean atmosphere. After enjoying the hot springs, we return to Cusco in our tourist bus, with an approximate 3-hour journey. The tour officially ends at Plaza Regocijo, located just one block from the main square of Cusco.

Horseback ride to Sieté Lagunas with Juan

Juan was an exceptional guide. He was patient for all of our picture taking. Our trek around the lagoons was supposed to be 45 minutes. I’m sure we were up there for an hour and a half. Never a bad photo op. Also he took random photos and videos of us on the mountain and then sent them to us. What a great surprise to get that. Indeed, above and beyond what we would have expected from a guide. Richard, our driver was great and after a long day he got us back to Cusco in record time. The hike is arduous for anyone, even if you are in shape. The horses got us up the mountain quickly and we weren’t fatigued by the long hike. I highly recommend taking the horses. Our horse guide walked up the mountain guiding the horses along the terrain. He might have been in his late 60s and moved like a champ. Also by being on horseback we were up the mountain before all the hikers we met at the trail head which afforded us pristine pics with no people. All in all Juan ran a great operation. I highly recommend him but even more no matter who you go with GO ON THIS TRIP!! You will not regret it and memories forever.
