Itinerary

20 min

Voss is a municipality and a traditional district in Vestland county, Norway. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Vossevangen. Vossevangen is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, forests, lakes and fast-flowing whitewater rivers. This has led to its development as a notable center of skiing, water sports, skydiving, paragliding and other adventure sports. Every year in the last week of June the area hosts the Extreme Sports Week which is regarded as the world's premier extreme sports festival. Bømoen, the local airstrip, is home to Skydive Voss, one of the largest dropzones in Norway, as well as a gliding club. The rivers provide various levels of white water, attracting kayaking, rafting and river boarding. Kite surfing and para-bungee may be seen on lake Vangsvatnet. The ski area, to the north of the town, is accessible via a cable car, Hangursbanen.

The gondola takes you from the train station in Voss to Mount Hanguren (820 masl) in under nine minutes. At the top station you get a panoramic view to many of the mountains surrounding Voss. You'll also find a variety of activities here - in the summertime you can go hiking, biking, paragliding or visit the restaurant and café and simply enjoy the view. In the winter season the gondola takes you to the ski resort Voss Resort, where you can have fun in the snow all day.

Eidfjord has several tourist sites, like the Sima Power Plant which is built into the mountain itself, the Måbødalen valley, and the Vøringsfossen waterfall. Large parts of the Hardangervidda (Europe's largest mountain plateau) are located in Eidfjord. The Hardangervidda Natursenter, a visitors centre and museum for Hardangervidda National Park, is located in Øvre Eidfjord. The 1,498-square-kilometre (578 sq mi) municipality is the 57th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. The Hardangerfjord is the fourth longest fjord in the world, and the second longest in Norway. The fjord stretches 179 kilometres (111 mi) from the Atlantic Ocean into the mountainous interior of Norway along the Hardangervidda plateau. The innermost point of the fjord reaches the town of Odda. The history of the fjord goes far beyond its Viking history, back to the time of hunters on the surrounding mountains, and later on, farming along this fertile area which today is considered the "fruit orchard of Norway". Later the fjord became the birthplace for a large tourism influx to Norway, and in 1875 Thomas Cook started weekly cruise departures from London to the Hardangerfjord, due to its spectacular nature, glaciers, and grand waterfalls.

Steinsdalsfossen is one of the most popular waterfalls in Norway. The river Fosselvi drops down 48 meters and is special because you can walk behind the water veil. The flood of the river is quite consistent and is being fed by water from a serie of lakes from which Myklavatnet. Steinsdalfossen was already popular a hundred years ago, at the time of the emperor of Germany, Wilhelm II. He visited Steinsdalsfossen every year, until world war II began. Actually the waterfall is not that old: at the 17th century the river flowed west of Steinsdalsfossen. In 1699 “Øvsthus farm suffered great damage when the river flooded its banks”. The old river channel was closed off, perhaps as a result of great amounts of snow or an avalanche, and the water ran instead off the cliff.

A fantastic day with magnificent scenery.

Our guide/driver, Vilde, was outstanding. She narrated telling us lots of interesting history and geography as well as driving for 9 hours on very challenging roads. The scenery was fantastic-mountains, valleys, farms, sheep and goats. The gondola ride and scenery at the top of Voss were terrific. Best of all the magnificent waterfalls we visited. Highly recommend this trip.

One of the best days of my life!

John was an incredible tour guide! I really appreciated how much background and history he provided. It helps that he is native to Bergen. He's an enthusiastic, well-educated, and caring tour leader. I had very high expectations of what this tour would be like and yet the actual experience exceeded my expectations! I got to see a very large area of the countryside, beautiful views of the fjords, and spectacular views of waterfalls, including Voringsfossen, which was the highlight of my trip. I will always remember and treasure that day for the rest of my life. By the way, I recommend you go with the local tour company Guided Fjord Tours rather than booking through a middle-man agency because it's important to support local businesses.

Amazing guided tour but no cruise

This is not a cruise trip but a trip in the car or bus by road. We travelled along the Hardangerfyord and saw 4 waterfalls. I was disappointed to learn that this is not a cruise on the fyord but our guide Mr. Michael was just amazing the whole day in telling us many facts and stories.

Operator response

If you read the tour description, cruise is not mentioned once. The Voss gondola and the waterfalls are the main attractions on this tour that takes place along the Hardangerfjord.
