Gjirokastra: UNESCO World Heritage Site - A Full Day Trip from Tirana

Description
Defined by its castle, roads paved with chunky limestone and shale, imposing slate-roofed houses and views out to the Drina Valley, Gjirokastra is a magical hillside town described beautifully by Albania's most famous author, Ismail Kadare (b 1936), in Chronicle in Stone. There has been a settlement here for 2500 years, though these days it's the 600 'monumental' Ottoman-era houses in town that attract visitors. For Albanians, the town is also synonymous with former dictator Enver Hoxha, who was born here and ensured the town was relatively well preserved under his rule, though he is not memorialised in any way here today. The aim of his tour is for you to experience the unique, magical and friendly atmosphere of Gjirokastra, not just to see the most popular tourist attractions, accompanied by our guides that knows all the secrets of the city.

This was one of the best tours I've had in my life, and I have been to almost 70 countries. It was mostly thanks to my excellent guide/driver Ilir. He has a deep understanding of history that goes beyond a disjointed series of Wikipedia recitations or a nationalistic (and chauvinistic) account of the past. He provides information in a way that invites us to think with him. It was so engaging that I learned a lot more in one day than the past several days with other guides combined. He also shares fascinating personal anecdotes of growing up in the communist era and gives a complicated sense of ambivalence he (and perhaps many others) have toward that era. Highly recommended IF you're traveling with Ilir.
Everything! Our tour guide was knowledgeable. His name is Mr. ELLER, I am not sure about the spelling of his name, but he is super good!
We had a great time visiting Gjirokastra! Everything went smooth and our guide was super friendly and very informative. He gave us a lot of information and insights not only about the visited places but also on the Albanian culture, history and everyday life. 100% recommendation
