Full-Day Tour in Turnagain

Description
A fully narrated tour by a local guide along Turnagain Arm offers stunning views of rugged mountains, glaciers, and Alaska flora and fauna (i.e., wildflowers, bald eagles, Dall sheep, beluga whales). We will stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC), where visitors can get up-close viewings and pictures of Alaska's most iconic animals, including brown bears, moose, caribou, and muskox. From there, the tour will continue down the scenic Portage Valley, where visitors can take in spectacular views of towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, the beautiful Portage Lake, and numerous glaciers, including the Explorer and Byron Glaciers. On the return trip, visitors will enjoy a provided lunch in Girdwood, a quaint town surrounded by the northernmost temperate rainforest. Overall, a tour of Turnagain Arm, the AWCC, and Portage Valley is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty and wildlife of Alaska and to learn about the history and culture of this incredible state.

Itinerary
I will show you the animals at the AWCC, pointing out where many like to hide. We will see caribou, moose, muskox, reindeer, black bears, brown bears, porcupines, and wood bison. We may get to see the lynx, the foxes, and the coyotes. Sometimes they are hiding where you can't find them.
We will be going into Portage Valley, home to four named glaciers, and we will stop to view Explorer Glacier and Byron Glacier, both of which are stunning hanging glaciers.
After an enjoyable day of seeing some amazing sights, let me treat you to a relaxing meal in Girdwood. We will sit down for a meal and enjoy talking about what we've seen.
Enjoy our travel along the scenic Turnagain arm Highway, maybe we'll be fortunate to see beluga whales, Dall sheep, or mountain goats. Either way, we'll enjoy seeing the stunning mountains as they come right down to the sea.
On our way back, we'll stop at Potter's Marsh to enjoy seeing how a wetland provides habitat for a large variety of Alaskan animals.

Highly recommended. We've been on many tours and this was easily one of the best. Tour guide, Tim, is very knowledgeable and friendly. It's obvious that he loves Alaska, and loves to share it with others. He's also very accommodating. He made extra stops, as needed, and picked up and dropped off people from several different hotels including one couple that needed to be dropped off at the airport. "Dad" jokes made me smile and were a bonus. The scenery in Alaska is beautiful. It was like one post-card-like scene after another, but so much better to be there in person. One stop was at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where we saw Brown Bear, Black Bear, Moose, Muskox, Wood Bison and a variety of other animals that were all native to Alaska. Next time we make it back to Alaska, we will take this tour again!
The tour provided an excellent overview of what the greater Anchorage area has to offer. The tour description is accurate. I loved the nature and wildlife stops particularly. We lucked out with an up-close (but safe) moose sighting, for which we made an unplanned—but much appreciated—stop at Potter Marsh. I would’ve liked more time at the AWCC, but enjoyed the time spent. The lunch took more time than expected but was very good.
Great tour with a great knowledgeable tour guy. I also got bonus in way back to Hotel, so generous

Great experience with our guide Tim. He was very personable and knowledgeable. The scenery was incredible and learning about the wildlife was amazing. The best part was our visit to Girdwood where we experienced fantastic food and conversation. Highly recommend this excursion for anyone who wants to learn about Alaska from a true resident.
