Tour language

This was mostly a Chinese language tour, even though we asked for a English language tour. We were put in a wrong group. It may not be guide’s fault.

Great guide, Emily, for castle and volcano with grasslands day.

Emily, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable and listened so well to our questions/concerns and allowed us to visit this spectacular natural area and see a wonderful old castle. Beef of the region sure was a tasty surprise!

The guide is informative and patience

The guides Chunhua and Summer are excellent. The tour is good. They gave extra suggestions to wonder about Fukuoka at the end. Chunhua also patiently helped to change one tour date and confirm information. We really appreciate it.

Do Not Recommend

I was supposed to hike the edge of the crater of the volcano. But earlier this year a helicopter crashed into the volcano. They still had not recovered the bodies and the helicopter out of the volcano crater yet, so we weren’t allowed to go up. I found this out because I can read some Japanese, which prompted me to research on the internet. I found out the site has been closed since January. The reason I am giving such a low score for this activity, is because of the tour instructor. The whole day, she pretended that we would be climbing the volcano. Only once we arrived, did she mention that sometimes due to bad weather or volcanic activity we may be not allowed to climb it. When we got there, we saw the red light, and she acted disappointed and said “sadly we cannot climb it today” We had to wait around for an hour and a half just to kill time. There was a cafe and a tourist shop selling souvenirs to an attraction we weren’t allowed to visit. This is where I saw the signs stating the volcano has been closed to tourists since January due to the helicopter crash. The tour guide was faking it, and pretended the whole day that we were going to climb it. We wasted so much time driving to Mt. Aso, only for it to be closed, (which our tour guide inevitably knew about) I understand that Viatour has now mentioned the closure in this activity listing, but I had booked this activity before the crash happened. I was never informed of the accident by Viatour or the tour company directly. On top of this, I booked an English tour. The tour guide was Chinese, and spoke in primarily Chinese the whole day. She told us from the start that she speaks “little English and little Japanese”

well

When I went there, it was not the right time if I can put it that way (March 3, 2026). Kumamoto Castle was beautiful! But the whole part of Mount Aso and the plains, well the timing was not good haha. First, the crater of Mount Aso was inaccessible, because there was a helicopter crash... Then the grasslands had just been burned to promote better growth during the spring and summer... Then there was so much "mist" that you couldn't see beyond 20 meters in front of you, so even if you wanted to enjoy the mountains or the area, well you couldn't see anything haha. On the other hand, we saw a small horse on the way home a horse and cows hihi. So I think this tour is worth it, just for the castle honestly, but in more optimal conditions haha

Mount Aso

It is a long day and lots of time travelling by bus but very rewarding. Great scenery as you travel. The Castle is stunning. And Mount Aso is beautiful. Our tour guide Nana was wonderful and really looked after our group.

Hmmm..,

Sun was a very good tour guide, doing the tour in both English and Chinese. He has great energy and enthusiasm! However, other than the castle and grassland, the photos for the tour are very misleading. We did not see any of the steaming waters. That was the main reason for booking the tour. We did see some smoke billowing from an area far in the distance. Nothing up close like the Viator tour photos. Good tour but show what is actually going to be seen.
