Description

Tour the wine cellar and Roman-era caves, then see how age-old winemaking traditions have been maintained through the years and incorporated into the modern production of today’s highly sought-after DOCG wines (don’t worry, you’ll even learn what all those initials mean!). After a walk through the vineyard, relax and take in the unforgettable view of the rolling hills and Rome in the background while enjoying a guided tasting of three wines; Frascati Superiore, Red Vagnolo, and Sweet Cannellino. After bidding a reluctant farewell to the winery, return to historic Frascati for a walking tour of the local shops and botteghe. Here you’ll taste celebrated local delicacies such as roasted pork (porchetta), focaccia, biscotti — just out of the antique wood-fired oven — and jug wine. After your meal, the train station is just a few steps away for your return to Rome.

Itinerary

Admission not included30 min

You should depart from the Termini Station in Rome on the 9:49 am train to Frascati. Please make sure that you are on the train 15 minutes beforehand! Your stop is the ancient wine-making town of Frascati.

30 min

Once you step out of the train, make your way towards the exit (no worries, it's a small station) where you will meet our driver and guide holding "Old Frascati" sign.

60 min

After the introductions are made, set off on a walking tour of the shops and botteghe in Frascati, tasting local specialties all along the way including revered local delicacies such as roasted pork (porchetta), biscotti just out of the antique wood fired oven, and jug wine from the oldest bakery and tavern in town. Oldest meaning hundreds of years old yet still adhering to age old traditions that render their products unlike any other. Be sure to leave plenty of room as the best is yet to come!

60 min

At the Old Frascati Vineyard (transport provided), a historic and renowned family-owned winery that has been producing red and white in the region for seven generations, roam free and explore the expansive grounds, wander amongst hand-tended vines, and see inside the "secret" underground chambers where persecuted families avoided certain death during WWII. Today, they are used to store barrels of wine. Each autumn at the Frascati winery, ripe grapes are transformed into exquisite varieties of wine. Following a guided tasting of each of the winery's products, namely Frascati Superiore DOCG white wine, Vagnolo IGP red wine, and Frascati DOC White Wine, the family's extra virgin olive oils come next, paired with a selection of tasty breads.

Winery tour was...

Winery tour was fantastic. Tour of Frascati was just okay. Tour guide was great and knowledgeable, but town is small and easily navigable. Would rather have walked around and did our own thing.

Frascati wine and town

Tour was great at the winery and in town. Sampling the local wine with the porchetta and the meal were excellent. Would highly recommend tour to anyone. Tour guide Alana I believe was her name was super. The only difficult part was finding platform 20B at termini station with long walk

Worth It!

Fascinating vineyard with an interesting history. Our host, Paola, was an expert and gave us some fantastic tips on how to spot good wine.

Get away from the crowds and enjoy wine in the countryside!

The tour largely focuses on wine production in Frascati and, in particular by one vineyard. The owner was very knowledgeable and pleasant, and her tour included time among the vines as well as in her cave cellar. We tasted three wines, two from her vineyard and one from Rome and she taught us what to look for when tasting the wines. The setting was lovely! After the final tasting and a chance to purchase wine, we went to the city center for a short walking tour that included a tasting of the local pork. We then walked to the restaurant for the included lunch, which was great. The guide departed during lunch, so it was up to you to get back to the train station at a time of your choosing to return to Rome. With respect to the train tickets that were supposed to be included in the price, I never received them, but it appears that it was a miscommunication between me and Viator. Make sure to send a confirmation email when they send the excursion ticket. If you don't get sent train tickets, they are easy to purchase at the terminal and cost under 5 euros for the round trip.

Wine, wine, olive oil!

Our day in Frascati at the vineyard couldn’t have been more enjoyable. The short ride from the train station to the vineyard was beautiful and once on property it only got better. We were able to walk around the vineyard while learning all about how the grapes are harvested and the history of the land the vineyard was on. We stepped into the wine cellar and were completely taken aback by how beautiful it was and the history of everything. It was so amazing being able to drink wine that was being made in a building that was hundreds and hundreds of years old. The wine. The olive oil. All of it was simply amazing!! Once we left the vineyard we got go on a tour of the city itself and enjoyed a simple and amazing lunch as well as some snacks from a local shop. I would recommend this trip to anyone. You will not be disappointed!!
