Our original route passes the Heidelberg Castle, which is the epitome of German romanticism and the ruined Frauenalb Monastery, where you will stop for a moment to admire the scenery.
We'll head to Baden-Baden, one of the 11 "Great Spa Towns of Europe'' that are part of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will be amazed by the town's tranquil atmosphere and elegant architecture. You'll have plenty of time for sightseeing, souvenir shopping and lunch (at your own expense).
To explore we will also stop by the Mummelsee lake, which, according to legends, is inhabited by a Nix and the King of the Mummelsee.
The old university town of Freiburg is known for its medieval charm and lively atmosphere, so you will have a nice time exploring its narrow cobblestone streets, stunning Gothic cathedral, and bustling market squares. Wine lovers may also be interested in trying local wine (not included in the price), as Freiburg is situated in the heart of the major Baden wine-growing region.

Very nice place to visit but wear walking shoes because the cobbled streets will make your feet into marshmellows in a few days. Lot's to see but the Beer isn't as variable as Berlin and Munich. Wonderful cable car ride up to see the city but the bus driver (number 20)was an arrogant basterd who rolled his eyes when we tried to get on through the wrong door, there wasn't any signs,he was more interested in his mobile phone than helping anyone. Lots of walking trails ,but buy an all week tram/bus ticket from the information building to get around. Restaurants are a little boring , the usual Italian,Turkish,Japanese and Thai which were not that special,food very bland. There is a good Cuckoo clock and souvenir seller called Schwarzwaldmarie in the Munsterplatz who i bought a clock from , not cheap but it's made in Germany and good quality. Easy to spend a week seeing everything and to see the beauty of the Black Forest.
This is a great day trip, but you need to be prepared for a fairly long ride (about 5 hours in the van) with short stops. We had a cloudy rainey day which took away from the experience but even then it was still worth it. Heidelberg Castel and Frauenalb Monastery are impressive. We suspect Mummelsee Lake would have been as well but by the time we got there it was pouring rain, after sunset, and foggy. We had the option to choose our start time and got lazy and chose 11:00am, but for a long day trip we should have scheduled for 9:00, no later than 10:00. Baden-Baden itself is not what we expected - it is a nice village but more commercial for shopping (we liked downtown Mainz shopping better)- we did have a great lunch on the plaza at Amadeus. Driving through the hills of the Black Forest is a treat, with many views to hills, valleys, streams, vineyards, and farms (weather took away from this for us but would have been awesome we are sure on a sunny day). Our driver was friendly and capable, but you should be aware that at the stops you are self guided - which was fine with us but I think that part of the experience may vary from driver to driver (our driver was quiet which was fine but I am sure there are others that will provide play by play as you drive).
