Itinerary
meet the “chiavigero”, the person in charge of opening this jewel case of artistic magnificence. The moment the key turns in the lock, and the doors open, you will start perceiving the interior, still dim and silent. Get ready to be surprised: the next thing the key bearer will do is turn on the lights, firstly those that reveal the amazing frescoed vault. Watch the light slowly illuminate the 3600 square meter masterpiece painted by Vasari and Zuccari. Admire the elaborate, vibrant “Last Judgement” fresco, watch the elders of the Apocalypse, the angels, and the saints come to life before your eyes. Follow your guide, and gaze at the Duomo’s dazzling clock: painted by Paolo Uccello, it tells time from sunset to sunrise! Listen to its uncanny history and then discover the rest of this beautiful church. At the end of the visit, time to treat yourself to a tasty Italian breakfast: join the locals at the bar of a historical café and enjoy a delicious espresso, cappuccino, and brioche!
Crown your tour with a memorable viewing of Brunelleschi’s cupola. Access the Duomo again from a privileged entrance, the Porta Canonici open solely for your party, and climb up to the world’s most famous dome. Once on top, relish the extraordinary cityscape, and appreciate learning about Brunelleschi’s talent, the people he worked with, and how he built the cupola. Meantime, enjoy watching Florence, and Florentines, from high above.

Excellent guide- wonderful to go early before the crowds and heat!
Amazing visit!! Our tour guide Maria Cristina was awesome as she knew every bit of the history of this wonderful cathedral, its famous Duomo and of Florence overall. Super recommended
Maria Cristina is an amazing guide and this is the best tour! I have been inside the duomo and the dome several times and this is absolutely the best way to see it and learn all about it. Not having people in there before us is an incredible gift and makes for great photos. Highly recommend.
It was such a great and informative tour! Maria was very thorough and helpful throughout the tour. Definitely recommend!!
This was a wonderful way to view and tour the Cathedral and the Dome. You get to be the first in the building, and even get to watch it being opened for the day. Only thing to note - it's sometimes offered as a "Duomo Sunrise" tour. It's not. It starts well after sunrise, which given how early sunrise is might be preferred by most people.
Amazing experience. This is the way to see the climb the Duomo, by doing the First Access tour. The guide was very knowledgeable about the Cathedral as well as Florence. The views from the dome are breathtaking, well worth it.
An absolutely amazing tour that was incredibly well-managed from start to finish! Our guide, Francesca F., was exceptionally knowledgeable about both history and architecture. She brought the city to life with fantastic facts and stories covering the Renaissance, the Medici family, and everything that makes Florence unique. Her detailed explanations inside the cathedral were a major highlight. She walked us through the fascinating history of the different facades and pointed out the beautiful interplay of the colored Tuscan marbles. We learned so much about the stunning sculptures housed inside the church and loved hearing the captivating stories surrounding the high altar. When it came to the climb, her explanation of the Duomo's dome architecture was beautiful and easy to understand. Once at the top, she pointed out and shared the history behind every major landmark visible—from the cathedral and bell tower to historical hospitals and even the distant airport. Francesca’s genuine enthusiasm for Florentine history is contagious. She even went out of her way to take great pictures for us. We absolutely loved this tour and highly recommend booking with Towns of Italy!
The tour was amazing! Watching the key keeper open the doors and walking through the duomo, in a small group, without the crowds, was a wonderful experience! Our tour guide, Allá, was very informative. A must do while in Florence!
Maria was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and friendly! We enjoyed learning so much from her. This tour was amazing since there were no crowds inside the Duomo or when we got to the top of the dome. Would highly recommend to anyone!
I booked this tour months before arriving in Florence and was so excited for it after hearing about it on Instagram from Rob and Kim’s ultimate Italia. The tour was absolutely worth the price and completely lived up to my expectations. Our guide was gracious, patient, knowledgeable, and very easy to hear throughout the tour. She shared so much interesting information, and the experience also included tickets to the Baptistry and the museum, both of which I visited and thoroughly enjoyed. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Florence.
