Our Fes to Volubilis Excursion Starts pick up you at your hotel or riad in Fez, the time that would be suited for you. for a 1 hour's drive west to the Imperial city of Meknes. Driving across the plain you will see vast acreages of vineyards which produce good quality wine, much of which is exported to France. You will have up to three hours in Meknes to explore the town including the expansive souks, the fascinating historical sites and to take lunch. Moulay Ismail made Meknes the capital city of Morocco during his reign around 1700; his mausoleum and the Rouah, his stables for over 12,000 horses, together with Place el-Hedim, the central pedestrian square in the Medina, are well worth a visit. The souks of Meknes are refreshingly spacious compared to Fez, which makes the city a relaxing place to explore.

Meknes to Moulay Idriss After lunch our journey takes you 30km north to the hillside settlement of Moulay Idriss. The town is one of the country's most important spiritual sites and a place of pilgrimage as it is the site of the tomb of Moulay Idriss, a prominent Moroccan saint in the late 8th century and a great grandson of the prophet Mohammed. The town is often bypassed by non-Muslim tourists, whose closest encounter is often a photograph taken from nearby Volubilis. There is limited access to the green-tiled shrine but the myriad of narrow streets leading to vantage points for views over the valley towards Volubilis are well worth a short stop. Moulay Idriss to Volubilis and Fez Leaving Moulay Idriss for the short 4km drive to the World Heritage Site of Volubilis, there are a number of vantage points to take photographs of the town. Volubilis is the site of the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, particularly noted for its superb mosaic floors

Excellent experience; we took a day trip from Fez to Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, and in the afternoon to Meknès. Moustapha is a great professional, a very good driver, attentive and kind; we would definitely do it again!

Great! You get to tailor the experience to yourself, do what you want and leave when you want. So much better than a big group tour.
Firstly - great job Aziz - you were a great driver and very nice company. Although a little more money than the equivalent group tours to Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes, having a private tour for just the 3 of us was great as it allowed us to spend as long or as little time at each stop as we wanted and then move on. In the end the trip took just short of 8 hours. We went to Volubilis first (about 1.5 hour drive) which was fascinating and we took a good long time to look around it all (we didn't bother with a guide but I had downloaded info on it - note a lot of the boards by key buildings giving information have very little info or have been defaced). Then we went to Moulay Idriss which looks much better from a distance - once you're in it it's not much to speak of at all. We just took a few photos from a view point and then asked Aziz to go straight to Meknes. In Meknes we looked around the small medina, had a little wander around the main square, (it was raining so it didn't look it's best I'm sure) had a spot of lunch and then went to the famous mausoleum which opened at 3pm. This was flashy and shiny but not very characterful or interesting at all and it's really done in 10 minutes - To me it was not worth the trip there unless you've religious reasons to go. Then back to Fes. Our driver Aziz was fantastic - we felt really safe with him driving and he took no risks. He was at the pick up point (the blue gate) bang on time. On the road he told us about a few noteworthy things (remember he is not a guide) and he was a very pleasant, chilled chap to talk to with good English. We were really pleased that he was our driver. I would recommend the trip to anyone - it was really good value for the 3 of us and it gave us the freedom we wanted. But if a friend asked for advice I would tell them to only bother going to Volubulis and then return back to Fes!

Volubilis is interesting but there are no signs if you plan to do it by yourself. Meknes has a very small medina and a tomb. Overall, not a very big attraction.
