Imjingak Park is the closest point to the DMZ accessible to civilians and a powerful symbol of Korea’s hope for reunification. Explore historic landmarks such as the Freedom Bridge, the Mangbaedan Altar, and the war-damaged steam locomotive, while learning about the legacy of the Korean War and the story of a divided nation.
You’ll then be taken to the Dora Observatory, where you can use binoculars to scope out North Korea. Listen to your guide explain the lifestyle across the river as you observe the village of Kijongdong.
Re-board the coach and head to the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, located beneath the border of North Korea and South Korea. Here, learn about the role of these tunnels, which are believed to have been planned as a military invasion route by North Korea. Very interesting tour, well worth the time! Our pleasant and cheerful guide Hazel kept everything running efficiently and kept us informed of the schedule, timings and especially the change of itinerary when a traffic accident blocked the road to the observatory. I booked the option with the defector Q&A which was touching. Please note that the visit to the 3rd tunnel is more arduous than it sounds, and you should be in good shape to go down and back. The tour gives a lot of background info and history of the Korean conflict, but doesn’t overdo it. The highlight for me was peering into the binoculars and actually seeing village people inside the DPRK.
