For more than 40 years I have been visiting the Christmas market in Cologne. Actually, there are several Christmas markets of which four are within walking distance, the market in the harbor is a 20-minute walk. The great thing about these markets is the fact that all markets have to be Christmas related. Something that has nothing to do with Christmas gets no place here. Officially, these markets open at 11 a.m. but it pays to be present at 9 a.m. This way you are almost guaranteed a parking space near or even under the Kölner Dom. Have breakfast (Eiger a 5-minute walk) and then go to the markets. If you still want to go to the port you can board the shuttle train for 2 euros which depart every few minutes from the various markets. A huge ice rink and many restaurants are always present. Just highly recommended.
Tour includes three Christmas markets. It started at the one by the Cologne cathedral but also went to the Winter Market and Angel Market. Fun to see the differences in each.
