Certainly! Devonport is a charming seaside suburb located on Auckland’s North Shore, known for its rich history, stunning coastal views, and vibrant local culture. Historical Significance Devonport is one of Auckland’s earliest settled areas, with a deep Māori and maritime history. The volcanic cones in the area—Takarunga (Mt Victoria), Takapuna, and Takararo—were once fortified Māori pā (villages), providing fertile land for growing crops and access to abundant seafood. Wonderful half day trip to historic Devonport!

Michael met us right on time at the pickup point. He accompanied us all through the tour on the short ferry ride to Devonport and up to Mount Victoria. The food stops were excellent consisting of steamed mussels, local fish and chips, and finally gelato! Michael is a very pleasant young man and made the tour very enjoyable. Would highly recommend this tour to Devonport!

We would recommend this tour. We enjoyed it!

Great afternoon! Sean picked us up our hotel, drove us down to the marina and across the bridge into Devonport while sharing the history of the area and the unique bridge construction and expansion. Once in Devonport we visited a heritage restaurant where sean ordered a lamb dish and a mussels and oyster dish for us that was delicious. Lovely service and the setting out on the patio was peaceful. Then off we went to pick up fish and chips and a savory pie o& ou4 choosing ( we choose a streak and Guinness and a mince and cheese) and drove up to North Head for a lovely picnic. With a beautiful view of the harbour. Then Sean lead us on a tour of munition tunnels and shared the history of this strategic defensive location. Interesting and worth our visit. Then back off into town where we had an ice- cream at another heritage building, their local cinema. After which Sean took as to the ferry terminal where we said good bye. We chose to independently explore the little shops along Main Street before taking the short 10 minute scenic ferry ride back into Auckland. We paid $7.50 pp for the ferry ticket back. We would recommend this tour.

A bit of a disappointment…

We were looking forward to our Devonport Food Tour. We met our guide, Michael, stepped onto to the ferry to make our way to Devonport. Michael gave a brief introduction to Auckland & Devonport. We walked to Signal Hill restaurant, a lovely old building renovated into a restaurant. We were served mussels & shoulder of lamb. Not being a seafood eater I settled on a plate of lamb, no salad, no sides, just meat. We finished our food, up from the table, straight into an old run-down fish ‘n chip shop next door. We were given a paper package with chips & fish to share. The fish was somewhat tasteless coated in a soggy, pale batter. The chips were ok. There were little plastic tubs of sauces (3 I think), one of group asked for more sauce & we were shocked when the owner said we would have to pay for it! Good grief, the tubs were tiny! We walked to see the Auckland city skyline atop a dormant volcano crater, then back down the hill to a gelato shop for “dessert”. Michael said his goodbyes here & left us to make our way back to Auckland. I felt that Michael was somewhat knowledgeable about Auckland & Devonport but lacked the confidence, interaction & communication skills needed to be a tour guide. I think that for the price we paid, we should have received a better ‘foodie experience’.

Thank you for leaving a review. As mentioned in our product description on Viator, this tour includes mussel dishes and fish and chips. Everyone who went with you also enjoyed themselves and left reviews saying the food was delicious. Wrapping fish and chips in newspaper is a traditional New Zealand fish and chips culter. It’s more than just a meal here; it’s a ritual, a memory, and a cultural cornerstone wrapped in butcher paper. Originally served in newspaper, the dish quickly became a staple—especially on Friday evenings, thanks to Catholic traditions that encouraged fish consumption. Our Tour title is Devonport Food & History walking tour. We wanted to show our guest about our history and serve in traditional ways. We feel sorry if you expected different way of serving. and about the sauces. We pay for the sauces every Fish and Chips shops in NZ. Please we hope you understand this situation. Also we are try to serve big portion of foods. Not like finger food size portion on other foodie experience. We aim to provide our customers with ample portions of food and stories about the NZ and Deveonport. We will try more hard to make all travelers saticfy our service. THank you for your review.

great food, a bit rushed

the food was good, but we thought it would be spread out over a longer peeiod of time. We went from one place to the next which was 3 doors away, then to a 3rd place that was a block away. Our guide was good, but needs to speak up a bit, he was difficult to hear.
