Itinerary

30 min

Step inside the National Sanctuary of Finland, a magnificent example of Brick Gothic architecture that has stood for over 700 years. Your guide will share stories of the kings and queens buried within its walls as you admire the towering nave and intricate stained glass. It is not just a church, but a living chronicle of Finnish history and the spiritual heart of the city.

20 min

Immerse yourself in Turku’s deep-rooted maritime identity at this world-class nautical center located by the Aura River. You will visit the impressive fleet of museum ships anchored outdoors, including the majestic wooden tall ship Suomen Joutsen. It’s a fascinating look at the era of sail and steam that shaped the Baltic Sea’s history.

Admission not included50 min

Explore the massive stone corridors of one of Finland’s most iconic landmarks, dating back to the 1280s. This fortress has served as a defensive bastion, a lavish court for royalty, and even a prison over the centuries. Walking through its medieval rooms and Renaissance halls offers a vivid glimpse into the life of the Swedish nobility who once ruled these lands.

15 min

Visit one of the city’s most intriguing transformations: a granite hilltop that once housed Finland’s most notorious prison. Now a trendy lifestyle hub, the area blends grim history with modern luxury, featuring a boutique hotel and a local brewery. You’ll hear tales of famous escapes while enjoying some of the best panoramic views over the city of Turku.

10 min

Travel back in time as you wander through the only area of 18th-century wooden buildings to survive the Great Fire of Turku. These narrow lanes and charming courtyards offer a rare look at how locals lived and worked centuries ago. Your guide will point out the traditional craftsmanship and the peaceful atmosphere that makes this district a "living museum."

10 min

Dominating the western skyline of the city, this breathtaking red-brick masterpiece is one of Finland’s finest examples of the Gothic Revival style. Designed by Lars Sonck, the church is famous for its soaring spires and its unique transition into Art Nouveau interior details. As you walk through its grand entrance, your guide will reveal the artistry behind its intricate woodcarvings and the stunning altarpiece that makes this one of the most photographed landmarks in Turku.

40 min

Conclude your tour by soaking up the local atmosphere in this beautiful 19th-century indoor market. Wander past stalls filled with local cheeses, smoked fish, and traditional Finnish pastries, all housed under a stunning vaulted ceiling. It’s the perfect place to sample authentic flavors or pick up a handcrafted souvenir.

Excellent experience in a medieval city

We loved our driver Matthias, who was so knowledgeable, as well as Lena, who brought us around Turku. She was very cognizant of our slowish walking, and always was considerate. So much history in Turku - the only recommendation I would make is to include the Maritime Museum, which we passed. I would have liked to have gone inside, but we did not have the time.

Worth a see of you are looking to fill some time

We did this as a filler-day and very glad we added it to the itinerary. It is another beautiful location with a lot of history. The castle is not like what you imagine compared to other European medieval locations or in the movies. It's simple in many ways, and provided a new perspective of my imagery and understanding of its time period in this area of the world. Best word may be - illuminating. We had seniors with us, so I would like to provide awareness that this is not the best location to visit if you have a hard time getting around. The roads are old style coble stone, like downtown Helsinki, and there are more inclines to traverse. It's not terribly difficult, but be aware if traveling with seniors because it will slow them down. Tour guide was very well informed, and driver, Mathew, was very personable.

Great to see a different area outside of Helsinki. Nice walking tours along the river and down to the castle.
