Itinerary
The Conimbriga aqueduct starts at Alcabideque where the original collecting basin of the spring water is still used as the local village pond. Next to the pond are the impressive ruins of a castellum which acted as a cleaning basin. After 3,5 km the water entered to the town of Conimbriga partly carried by a substructure and ending in a castellum aquae of complex structure.
PO.RO.S – Roman Portugal Museum in Sicó is the newest museum of Condeixa municipality. It consists of a cultural project integrated in the Roman legacy tour. As a multimedia and virtual space, it works in combination with Conímbriga (closed on mondays).
Inhabited since pre-Historic times, Conímbriga was occupied by Roman troops in 139 BC and it became the prosperous capital city of the Lusitania province. In the next century, during the reign of Emperor Augustus, the urban part of the city grew. It was during this period that some of the most important buildings for everyday life in a Roman city were build such as the forum, the amphitheatre and the thermal baths. Later, a three-nave basilica was built in the town’s centre. You can also visit the Museum where several rooms will take you to everyday life at this Roman city through objects discovered after many years of excavations, its religious life, architecture manor houses and their decoration and even life at the forum.

I was very happy with the tour of Conimbriga by Alfredo. He knows the site very well and has a clear itinerary to hit the principal areas, like walls, governor’s house, palestra, forum, ending at the phenomenal House of the Fountains. We spent about 2 hours at the ruins, including a brief stop at the museum. Whether or not you decide to use a guide, if you are in Coimbra or walking the Camino, it is well worth a stop. Alfredo included a bonus stop at the Castellum in Alcabideque which really closed out this trip back 2000 years in time. Alfredo coordinates the tour with pick-up / drop-off at select hotels in Coimbra Baixa but was flexible with our pick up because we were coming off the Camino de Santiago trail which passes right in front of the site. We even had the pleasure of being escorted by Simba, Alfredo’s German shepherd, who was surprisingly at home among the ruins.
The tour was excellent. Our guide Alfredo provided so much great information and explanation of the Roman ruins site at Conímbriga and the museums we visited. If we had visited the ruins on our own, we would not have known the richness and intricacies of the experience. It was definitely a five-star experience!
You could do this on your own but having someone along is helpful and put us at ease. Alfredo went with us to the museums and told us all about the Roma ruins we visited.
Yesterday we went with Alfredo to Conímbriga, the ruins of a Roman city outside of Coimbra, Portugal. It was a fabulous tour. Alfredo took us to a local museum about Roman life before we went to the ruins which gave us a much better awareness of what we would be seeing in the context of Roman daily life. He then took us to the ruins and answered all our questions as we walked all over the ruins. I really appreciated the relaxed pace he set, his in depth knowledge and his interesting stories. We ended the tour with a visit to the Conímbriga ruins museum, and finally at the artesian spring which fed the aquaduct to the city. Our 4 hour tour was so much more interesting than we had expected. I recommend it whole heartedly to everyone.
I can recommend Alfredo with the greatest enthusiasm: knowledgeable, thoughtful, kind, and interesting. He is a wonderful guide.
Alfredo is very knowledgeable, friendly, and has a great sense of humour. He picked us up very close to where we were staying and shared lots of information about the area along the way. We had a great time. Highly recommend!
Very informative! Perfect pace. We learned so much from our guide.it was an amazing Roman Ruin site!
We felt Alfredo was ok to good -he seemed a little abrupt and when I made mistakes with my language -
Thank you for your review. I'm sorry the tour didn't meet your expectations, but to be honest, I don't understand your criticism. We had a friendly conversation all afternoon and as far I remember without any issues. In any case, I'll take your comments into consideration.
Alfredo is the owner of the company. Very knowledgeable and fun. Only issue was that he would not pick us up at our hotel, although Viatour indicated that hotel pick up was included.
Wonderful explanations of what we were seeing. Made all the difference. Alfredo was stellar. Worth every penny
