The Sacred Valley was a key area of settlement for the Incas. The climate in the valley sustains fertile plains, which allows for a lot of growth, which is unusual for the high Andes. Here, the Incas sculpted the mountain flanks with vast contour terracing and irrigation channels. Our driver and guide will point out the best places to take photos to capture the beauty and vastness of the Sacred Valley.

Terraces of Moray. Moray is made up of three amphitheater-like terraces made by the Incas. These terraces, which are carved deep into the earth in a bowl shape, are thought to have been used as an agricultural laboratory to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops.

salt mines of Maras, which are just 2 miles away. Dating back to colonial times, Maras was considered a salt-producing center. Carved into the mountain side are over 3000 salt pools, which are filled daily by a little stream of water. Once the water evaporates, it leaves behind a glistening patchwork of salt. The salt mines are a great spot to take pictures and capture the amazing beauty of both the Andes and the spectacular Salineras.

We will visit the ruins once we reach Ollantaytambo. This site highlights the remarkable Inka architecture and was built during the Incas heydays. This is an extraordinary Inca site and in addition to the ruins you will see an amazing rock formation representing the Inca god Wiracocha.

Tour full of hidden gems we would’ve missed on our own

We had an amazing experience on the Sacred Valley tour. Everything was perfectly organized and ran smoothly from start to finish. Our guide, Juan, was truly exceptional — knowledgeable, attentive, and passionate about sharing the history and culture of the region. He made the entire day unforgettable. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cusco.

This is a great...

This is a great informative trip, very well organized. Thanks to Juan who made it interesting (in various languages!). It is visible that he is impressed by the Inca culture and wisdom. We learned so much about Incas’ discoveries, science and religious believes. Also very convenient to have the option to end the trip in Ollantaytambo.

Busy day!

Juan was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. It was nice that our tour was only 5 people. The historic sites visited were amazing. I think the itinerary was a bit skewed- we were rushed at sites but seemed to have plenty of time to ‘shop’ at vendors selected by the tour company. We didn’t go to the Pisac market- only a jewelry store. Van was not air conditioned. Not a huge deal but may be a consideration for others.

A very enjoyable day in the Sacred Valley

A very enjoyable day in the Sacred Valley. We visited three Incan sites, the Maras site mines, two 'cultural stops' (which normally we're not keen on as these tend to include forced selling but were actually quite interesting) and stopped for lunch. Jimy, our guide, was extremely knowledgable and passionate about the Incan culture and history. We learnt a lot throughout the day with him. The pace and time at each site is about right. We spent 30-60 minutes at Pisac and Ollantaytambo and 15-30 minutes Maras and Moray. Lunch is quite late in the afternoon, around 2pm, but this is probably unavoidable due to the itinerary and location of each site. I'd suggest bringing snacks. Lunch could be better. It is a buffet-style meal in this big empty hall with very average food, none of it labelled or covered from the flies. We stuck to the plainer options (rice, pasta, etc). I would definitely recommend this tour run by Willka Travel, especially if you are heading to Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu afterwards like us as we got dropped off in the centre of Ollantaytambo, 5-10 minutes walk from the train station.
