Must experience

Absolutely must see and experience. Very modern, well organised, interacive museum. Recommend the making your own chocolate experience. It was conducted by a very passionate and devoted Man who explained the whole process, types of cocoa and led is through making our own chocolate bar.

Not great, expensive

A series of shapshot of chocolate history, expensive

Operator response

283franciscoj, calling the Città del Cioccolato a simple “series of snapshots” is a reductive description of a much broader and more structured museum experience. The visit begins with the ancient history of cacao in Mesoamerican civilizations, then follows its arrival in Europe and its evolution over time, moving through the Italian chocolate tradition and finally to Perugia, with Perugina and Eurochocolate. It also includes a cacao forest, the social and sustainability dimension of the supply chain, and a functioning bean-to-bar factory. Alongside this, the museum offers immersive environments, digital installations, a free audio guide, an olfactory experience, tastings, and in-depth content throughout the route. The ticket price is therefore consistent with the nature, quality and breadth of the experience offered. One may not appreciate the visit, of course, but it is only fair to describe it for what it actually is.

Great way to spend an afternoon

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first came in, but I was pleasantly surprised at how comprehensive it was - starting with a very respectful look at the origin of the plant in South America and its significance to the indigenous populations, before it was 'discovered' by colonisation and brought to Europe (with a clear chapter reserved for Perugina in this story). The last part of the museum focuses on the modern cacao growing industry and how issues like fair trade and labour rights (among others) are a big problem. I really appreciated that this was included - it would have been easy for them to ignore this difficult topic and end the tour by funnelling people directly into the gift shop, but the Chocolate Museum does the responsible thing by presenting both the good and bad parts industry. And educating us as consumers on how to make responsible choices. Do note, this museum requires a lot of walking and meandering between rooms. Great for children, but could be challenging for people who can't stand or walk for long stretches.

Operator response

Dear Visitor, thank you very much for such a thoughtful and generous review. We are especially pleased that you appreciated the breadth of the narrative and the care with which the museum addresses not only the history and cultural significance of cacao, but also the more complex contemporary issues connected to its production. For us, it was essential not to present chocolate in a superficial or purely celebratory way, but to offer a broader and more responsible perspective, one that embraces origins, transformations, achievements and contradictions. Knowing that this came through so clearly during your visit is particularly meaningful to us. We also appreciate your practical note regarding the extent of the tour, which naturally requires time, given the richness and variety of the subjects explored throughout the museum. At the same time, we would like to underline that the entire experience has been designed with full attention to accessibility, so that visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility can enjoy the museum in the most appropriate and comfortable way possible. Thank you again for your words, and we hope to welcome you back to the Città del Cioccolato!

The sweetest museum in Italy.

A splendid Chocolate Museum in the historic center of Perugia, where in addition to telling the story of this super ingredient, we were able to taste many varieties of chocolates. The kids can have fun in the organized paths, and the adults can relax in the various areas of the museum. Highly recommended if you have children, but also just for adults.

Perugina chocolate taste trap.

Committed and sophisticated, there is not much to see real except a few packs of old chocolate, some non-high-quality reproductions of Indo-American statues and many, many, many screens, of all sizes. shapes, colours and sizes. A cute and curated audio guide and a few chocolates offered here and there buffer the experience that, more than ever, is unmotivatedly expensive. 14€ per person, out of all grace, especially when compared to the short and poor quality of the experience. A full-blown tourist trap.
