Perugia and Assisi Full Day Tour from Perugia

Itinerary

Pass by

Perugia, the regional capital, is an ancient city located in central-northern Umbria. The historic center is built on the high hills along the right bank of the Tiber River. We will meet each other and start our walking tour of Perugia exploring its old Roman Ruins. During our tour you will also experience the athmosphere of a medieval Italian hilltown by visiting local handicraft shops and having a walk through typical little alleys. After a lunch break (not included) we will move to Assisi. The focus of our tour there will be the Basilica of Saint Francis with its magnificent frescoes by Giotto (13th - 14th C. ), one of the most important artists of Italy in the Middle Ages.

15 min

The upper marble basin has twelve sides divided into twenty-four smooth panels of pink Assisi stone. Each one is separated by an equal number of white Carrara marble statuettes set on ledges between the panels. Some of the figures represent personages from the history of the city and legends, while others are symbolic.

The Rocca Paolina, or Paolina Fortress, is right in the historical centre of Perugia and one can enter via a door at Porta Marzia or the escalator system that connects Piazza Italia with Piazza Partigiani.

Admission included20 min

The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is located in the historical centre of Perugia on Piazza IV Novembre, its southern façade facing the square. An early church dedicated to the proto-martyr Lawrence, who died in Rome in 258, was built here in the 9th century on top of the old Etruscan-Roman forum of the city. There is no trace of the first building.

15 min

The Etruscan monumental arch (III B.C.), North-oriented, belongs to the first City walls. With its 11 m. high and because of its excellent state of preservatino, it is considered as the most impressive of all the ancient Etruria.

The Basilica of Saint Clare is a church dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Order of Saint Clare.

Admission included20 min

The Temple of Minerva is an ancient Roman building. It currently houses a church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built in 1539 and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century. The temple was built in the 1st century by will of Gnaeus Caesius and Titus Caesius Priscus, who were two of the city's quattuorviri and also financed the construction.

A great way to see two beautiful little towns

Great day! It was ungodly hot but our tour guide kept us in the shade as much as possible. She was a great storyteller but also a master of Logistics. She arranged a lovely lunch as well as transportation which allowed us to be dropped off at the top of Assisi (which is on a very steep hill) and picked up later at the bottom. I give her my highest recommendation!

What a full and wonderful day!

The day was cold, windy, and damp, but the warmth of our guide Barbara and our driver cut through all that and made it a truly memorable visit. Barbara’s knowledge of art and history was amazing. There is a lot of walking and steps but she made allowances and accommodated our pace. We missed nothing. At the end of the day we felt we were saying goodbye to an old friend that we hope will see again soon. She made the tour a great personal experience, so much more than just visiting historical and religious monuments.

Great way to see Perugia and Assisi in a day

This tour was a great way to see the best of Perugia and Assisi in a day. 1st part was a walking tour of Perugia hosted by Pepe. Great views of the city, Etruscan walls, old fort ruins as well as history of Perugia and Italy. Also some excellent tips on a sunset bar and pizza by slice. Perugia is a wonderful and underrated city. 2nd part we were collected by a driver and taken to Assisi. Met by expert guide and taken through this fascinating world heritage site. A must see if you are in the region. All up one of the best private tours you can do in Italy.

Loved the Tour

Our guide, Werner, was truly a local, with earlier European background. His knowledge of history and art was amongst the best of any guide we have used anywhere. And his love of Assisi and St. Francis was very obvious. We also liked that he was flexible in scheduling, and open to expanding discussions.

Don’t miss this!

An excellent guide; informative and helpful. One of our best experiences in Italy so far. As we are “older”, we appreciated how he managed the pace. Michaela was a delight in every way.

Incredible cultural tour of Perugia and Assisi!

Francesca made our two city day tour very memorable. She brilliantly covered a huge amount of artistic social and cultural history across all of the ages of Etruscan, Roman, medieval and Renaissance history. She kept us in the shade when it got too hot and went at my slower pace when it was needed, and very kindly organised for us to take the tour of Basilica of San Francesco D’assisi from the top down so I didn’t need to walk the many steps going up! We would thoroughly recommend this incredible tour and our personal thanks to Francesca for a wonderful day.

Worth every minute

We loved this tour. Easy stroll around both cities. Our guide Michaela was wonderful and you could hear the passion he has for both cities and it’s history. And the recommendations for restaurants and other sites were spot on. These may be two small cities but having this tour made us fall in love with Umbria even more
