We did our tour with Wendy and it was amazing. She was very friendly, patient and knowledgeable. I only speak English (but learning Spanish) and my boyfriend speaks a little bit of Spanish, so she did the tour in both languages so that I could practice. We had a great time, laughing talking and Shari g our love of rum and chocolate. We had the store to ourselves maybe because it was a slower day of the week; we went on Tuesday evening right before the World Cup game between the democratic Republic of Congo and Colombia. It was a great way to pregame that event in style. The rum was delicious, and there was a lot of variety in the age, notes and type, and she taught us all about the culture.

OMG…..this was amazing. Upon arrival at the meetup location around 10a, we waited for about 15 mins and wondered if we were in the wrong spot. A young man across the street came to us and told us that the restaurant didn’t open until 12p. We explained that we were there for the chocolate and rum tasting. He said, let me make a call. Turns out our guide was involved in an accident that morning so the owner was coming to conduct the tour. The young man offered us water and some chocolates from his shop (for free!). About 5 mins later, he told us they were ready for us, and he carried our chocolates to the tour location a block or so away. Upon arriving, we thought we would be joining a group….nope, just the two of us and the owner (Abraham). He started off by getting to know us a bit and Abraham went from a thick “Spanish” accent to perfect English. We said, whoa, what just happened. Abraham explained that he went to university in North Carolina for a couple of years but found that his passion was cooking/creating, so he came back to Cartagena. He proceeded to take us through a chocolate and rum journey for a couple of hours. The more we enjoyed, the more he enjoyed. He got so excited he took us to the factory where he was making a special chocolate to be paired with a rare rum only sold in Austria. We had such a great experience and made a friend in Abraham. Turns out, after the tour we had already made lunch reservations at his restaurant, The Arsenal, and he made a special table and lunch for us as well. This is a must do in Cartegena if you like rum and chocolate!

That day didn’t start in the easiest way on our side, but stories like yours remind us why we do what we do. We’re especially glad everything turned into such a personal and memorable experience in the end. Alejandra was a lot of fun with great energy and taught us a lot about Colombian rums and spirits. That was a very memorable experience in a great setting. We had so much fun tasting and learning. Highly recommend this!

We did a fun rum tasting with 8 different Colombian runs, and there were also chocolates and small bites of food involved. The chocolates are apparently made at the shop, from cocoa bean.

Learned a lot about rum and the different qualities of rum. I have been drinking cheap stuff in the past thinking they were mostly similar and had some really tasty quality rum and was very impressed. Had an enjoyable time drinking and eating the snacks, just a warning: the last thing you will be given is a spoonful of honey/chocolate stuff - this is a hand scrub and not something you should eat. Don't ask how I know.
