Description

You cannot imagine until you stand gazing up at them how awe inspiring are the statues and stone-cut architecture of the Yungang Grottos. Over 50 thousand Buddhas in 252 man-made caves punctuate the cliff of Wuzhou Mountain. The statues range in size from tiny Buddhas smaller than an inch, arrayed like tiles in the sandstone, to great carvings 55 feet high (17 meters). UNESCO made this a World Heritage Site in 2001, describing it as “a classical masterpiece of Chinese Buddhist art.” Half a century in the making, involving tens of thousands of workers, this temple like the great cathedrals of Europe is a testament for the ages. It can not but raise our gaze. Your private English-speaking guide will explain it all in detail. This marvel is our destination. But first a more modern adventure: We'll shoot from the city for a roughly two-hour ride on the Beijing-Datong bullet train. From sleek steel to ancient stone – pretty amazing contrast in this day to remember for a lifetime.

Very nice tour

I would rate this tour 4 star. Everything was very smooth. They picked us up at the lobby of our hotel, took us to the train station and guide us all the way to the entrance. Very convenient, stress free. When we got there same thing, someone was waiting for us at the station with a private driver to take us to the grottoes and back to station when the tour was finished. Very very smooth and stress free. The reason why I rated 4 star is that the restaurant they took us for lunch was very ugly place, for locals I’m sure it’s a usual place, but for the price we paid for the tour could definitely be a better nice looking area. My wife and I ended up eating at KFC later due to the bad looking of the restaurant they took us. Everything else was very nice, the guide explained a lot about the history of the place, very nice lady. She even gave us hot pads because of the cold weather. On the way back the guide recommended a really really nice restaurant for hotpot 3 star Michelin. We loved it.

This was a very long tour, but...

This was a very long tour, but extremely worth the four hour drive from Beijing. Sights along the drive were awesome and the Grottoes were unbelievable, 45 Grottoes with amazing carvings everywhere. Lunch in Datong was wonderful and the local tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. One of the highlights of our visit to Beijing.

First off don't let the length of...

First off don't let the length of the day stop you from doing this tour!!! It was phenomenal!!! Bruce picked us up bright and early to start our long drive to The Grottoes. We arrived 3.5 hours after being picked up and Bruce told us where to go. This wasn't a tour as much as Bruce was our driver. I was a little concerned about that at first but as we wandered the grottoes and found each cave to be more amazing than the next we were all glad we were left to experience this at our own pace and as a family. After leaving with our mouths dropped to the ground from the sheer amazement of this place we met Bruce in the parking lot where we proceeded to the town of Datong for lunch!!! Bruce ordered a feast for us that we will remember forever. The restaurant was a blast more of a banquet hall and we were able to see a 12 year old boys birthday party going on and all the cultural fun that came with that!!!
Such a great day in every way and we would highly recommend Bruce and the long trip to The Grottoes. You'll never forget them!!!
