The Belvedere complex is an architectural masterpiece of a bygone aristocratic splendor designed to project a sense of earthly harmony. This terrestrial utopia was founded in the first decades of the 18th c. as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, the commander-in-chief of the Austrian army and one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history. Among the most significant buildings of the 18th c., the grandiose palace of the Upper Belvedere is a masterstroke of Baroque architecture while the surrounding formal gardens were inspired by classical antiquity.

Belvedere became one of the first public museums in the world with the intention to make the Habsburgs’ imperial collection accessible to the general public. Today the Belvedere Museum exhibits a world-class compilation of Austrian and international painting from the Middle Ages to the present day, including precious items of the Austrian National Gallery: masterpieces by including some of Gustav Klimt’s most acclaimed paintings: works from his golden period: “The Kiss,” “Judith,” landscapes from the Attersee series and sophisticated portraits of high society ladies.

Our guide , Annelie, was a real expert. We so enjoyed our time with her and learned so much. Not just about the art in the palace, but the architecture and history of Vienna. Her pacing was excellent throughout the tour. We never felt rushed and we were always able to stop and ask more questions. We very much enjoyed our time with her and would highly recommend.

Wonderfully informative tour with Lisle. She knows her art and history and customizes her tour to your interests.

Lisle is great, very knowledgeable about the art and history of Vienna. She also tells many stories which deepened our understanding. She managed to boil down a huge art collection into 2+ hours of focused viewing, especially of Klimt and his period. And her description of the origins of the palace and Prince Eugen were great. Lisle is friendly, personable and very competent. She helped to spark our understanding of Vienna and Austria overall on our 1st day in the city!

It’s an additional 25 euro per person. The grounds are beautiful. I personally found it to be very expensive for a two hour tour.

Operator response

Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the beautiful grounds. As noted in the tour details provided before booking, the museum entrance fee (€25 per person) is paid separately from the tour price. We're proud that so many guests have felt that having an expert guide help them to explore the palace's architecture and world-class art collection is worth the fee. But we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

Excellent and knowledgeable guide.

Katarina was excellent! She was very detailed on how to run the tour and extremely knowledgeable of each and every room. The stories behind the painters and paintings were fascinating.

Only book via Imperial Tickets the official site

Beautiful, 15 minutes walk from Karlskirche Church, following Belverdere we went to the concert Belverdere is beautiful, the paintings are spectacular, the gardens beautiful. Book via the official website ‘imperial tickets NOT Weintickets !!! this company charge a huge commission. You do not need a guide, just arrive, we did however pay £5 each to download the Ap guide, which was very useful , sometimes a little tricky to use but easier than a guide. We walked to the Upper Belvedere first & took the tour it is a busy place due to its location, booking is essential. We then walked around the lower Belvedere smaller gallery, a lovely cafe The staff in the gallery/reception especially ‘Miguel’ from New Milton, Hampshire ! A great place if you time in Vienna is limited as close by The Vivaldi concert and Opera Take water as €4 is pricey & an umbrella

Belvedere or "the beautiful view"

The skip the line tickets are worth the extra expense. Best to visit during low season as it gets very crowded. Otherwise it is an extraordinary display of opulence, art, design tastefully done. It is amazing what people could do when they were not preoccupied with social media, looking at their phones 24 x 7. Highly recommend especially for the younger generations. A guided tour or an audio guide rental is highly recommended to understand the history of the building and description of various art and artists of the era displayed.

Gustav Klimt at the Belvedere

The Belvedere is a must if you're looking for Gustav Klimt works of art, many other well known artists are displayed here. It is very busy and booking in advance is advised. It will take upto 2 hours. Some nice walks in the gardens will finish your day at the Belvedere

Wonderful Belvedere tour.

We really lucked out with our guide. Stephen was so knowledgeable and Informative. His details made the art so much more interesting and alive. I will never see Gustav Klimt's paintings the same way again.
