Bairrada Winery Route, half day from Coimbra
Description
After picking up the participants in Coimbra, we went to the village of Mealhada to visit one of the oldest wineries in the region. We walk through the tunnels where thousands of bottles age while we hear in detail about the sparkling wine production process. We have the opportunity to taste a red table wine, a white wine and a sparkling wine. After the visit, we will continue on a panoramic tour where we will pass through several wine estates, where we will stop at a viewpoint of the "Maria Gomes" swing to be able to observe some vineyards. In the village of Cúria, in the old railway station from the 1940s, is the headquarters of the Rota da Bairrada, a place where all the wine producers in the region are represented, giving us the privilege of getting to know the different wine products in a single place. After the wine tasting and visit, we return to the starting point in Coimbra.

Our guide Pedro was excellent and extremely knowledgeable. We were awed by the immense underground museum at Alianca on this tour. The wine from the region, particularly the sparkling wine, was delicious. We were very happy as well to discover Portuguese brandy. Amazing,

The advertisement was for wine tasting. We did little wine tasting. They had some sparkling wine at the first stop. The second stop had a big tour of the winery and a museum. The museum was huge. It was a nice collection of geological rocks, fossils, African art, etc. After an hour and a half tour, we finally sat down and had a little sparkling wine, and some odd other drinks. I didn’t sign up for a museum tour or odd little drinks. I signed up for a wine tour expecting to have a variety of white and red wines. We paid a good amount of money and didn’t get any of those. The tour operator was very nice and kind. But the whole set up was supposed to be for a wine tasting which it wasn’t. Sorry to say. The amount of money paid for this tour was definitely not worth it to us.

After a delicious traditional lunch of leitão bairrada, we visited the amazing Bairrada wine country, guided by the best guide: Xavier! He made sure we experienced the region in a way that fit our interests. The beautiful estates we passed reminded me a litle of driving through Bordeaux. Wines made from grapes traditionally grown in Bairrada, such as Touriga Nacional, Baga and Maria Gomes, are interesting and delightful. We stopped at the impressive Aliança winery, where the underground art collection is incredible. The visit included a tasting and tour. We also made a visit to a really nice tasting room/wine shop that represents most of the boutique wineries in the region. Highly recommend! This tour is perfect if you have only a day to visit this fascinating part of Portugal. Thank you, Xavier, for a wonderful day!

After a short drive from Coimbra we visited alianca underground wine museum. The museum was partly dedicated to an art collection of the main owner mostly from his travels throughout Africa. It had an amazing collection of minerals and fossils. The brandy barrels and bottles of sparkling wine were interspersed in stunning caves. The sparkling wine tasted delicious. We then went to a beautiful lookout over the vineyards before going to Curia train station for more wine tasting. Our guide Pedro was excellent and extremely knowledgeable about the wines and the region. Thank you for your recommendations , we bought some when we reached the Algarve.

This was such an amazing experience and far exceeded my expectations. I don’t typically like wine but I enjoyed all the samplings. The underground tour was very interesting as well. Our tour guide went above and beyond for us. I would highly recommend this tour.

Xavier and Bia were extremely knowledgeable, and explain very well, the procedure to make spumante, brandy and sangria. While going to the cellar we had the opportunity to see a wonderful exhibition from different parts of the world, which I appreciated very much. And after we went to another place where we got to taste four different types of wines. It was a lovely afternoon and worth going, I got more than what I expected.
