Baatara Waterfall, Aaqoura Lakes & Batroun | Day Trip Beirut

Description
Mountains in the morning, coast in the afternoon — this small-group day trip from Beirut packs Lebanon's most dramatic natural scenery into eight hours without breaking a sweat. Start at Baatara Gorge — the jaw-dropping three-bridge waterfall that stops everyone in their tracks — then discover the high-altitude lakes of Aaqoura, tucked away in the Lebanese mountains where most tourists never venture. Finish the day in Batroun — one of Lebanon's most chilled coastal towns, with a Phoenician sea wall, stone streets, and some of the best fresh seafood on the Mediterranean. Three completely different vibes. One great day. Perfect for solo travelers, backpackers, and anyone who wants to see the real Lebanon beyond the usual tourist trail.

Itinerary
9:00 AM — Departure from Beirut Your driver picks you up from your Beirut hotel and heads north into the Lebanese mountains — the city disappearing behind you as the road climbs toward Tannourine and the first natural wonder of the day.
Baatara Gorge — three bridges, one waterfall, zero words Nothing prepares you for Baatara. A 255-metre waterfall drops through three successive natural limestone bridges — a geological phenomenon found nowhere else on earth — disappearing into the darkness of the gorge below. Walk down to the viewpoint, feel the spray, hear the roar, and try to take a photo that does it justice. You cannot — but you will try anyway. In spring when the snowmelt is running hard, the volume of water is staggering. Even in summer the gorge is dramatic and the walk down is worth every step. One of the most photographed natural sites in Lebanon and one of the easiest to understand why.
From the gorge, head to Aaqoura — a high-altitude mountain area that most Lebanon visitors never find, which is exactly what makes it worth going. The lakes sit at over 1,500 metres above sea level, framed by cedar-forested ridges and mountain panoramas that stretch across the northern Lebanese highlands. Walk the lakeshore trail, take in the reflections, breathe the mountain air — it is one of those places that feels genuinely off the tourist map even though it is only 30 minutes from Baatara. Perfect for photos, perfect for a quiet moment, and a complete contrast to the drama of the gorge you just left.
Drop down from the mountains to the Mediterranean and arrive in Batroun — one of the oldest Phoenician cities in the world and today one of Lebanon's most beloved coastal hangouts. The old town's stone streets, Ottoman houses, and seafront cafés have a completely different energy from the mountain morning — laid-back, colourful, and full of good food. Walk along the ancient Phoenician sea wall — a 3,000-year-old natural rock barrier still standing on the beach — before settling in for an optional lunch of fresh mezze and seafood at one of the waterfront restaurants. Batroun is also famous as the home of Lebanon's craft beer scene if you feel like a cold one after a day in the mountains.
Return to Beirut — approx. 5:00–6:00 PM Coastal drive back to Beirut with drop-off at your hotel — completing a day that went from a three-bridge waterfall to mountain lakes to a Phoenician seafront in eight hours flat.

Overall, our party felt that it was only OK, for such a long drive. We have to say however that the Baatara Waterfalls were really worth it. You must take the time to go down next to the gorge into which the water falls to appreciate the beauty. As for the Akoura lake, we were not able to go very high because of snow on the road, therefore we probably missed out on the view of the many artificial lakes. The time spent in Batroun was mainly to have lunch. We went to the Phoenician wall and walked a few minutes. Our driver was very friendly. However, based on the tour description and inclusions listed, we were under the impression that a professional guide was included. The driver did not provide much information along the way, or while walking across a historical town such as Batroun. He mainly drove us to the locations.
Dear Pierre Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear that you found Baatara Gorge Waterfall truly worth the visit — it is indeed a spectacular natural site, especially when explored from down near the gorge. We also appreciate your understanding regarding the road conditions near Lake Akoura, as snow can sometimes limit access to higher viewpoints during certain seasons. Regarding your comment about the guide, we would like to clarify that this tour includes a professional driver/tour leader, not a licensed historical guide. As stated in the tour inclusions, a certified guide is not listed as part of the package. The driver’s role is to ensure smooth transportation and basic assistance at each stop rather than to provide in-depth historical commentary. We truly value your feedback and will continue working to make the tour descriptions as clear as possible to avoid any confusion. Thank you again for choosing to explore Batroun with us.
We had a great trip together with Ahmad to the hidden gems of Libanon, we would absolutely recommend taking the trip when exploring the country!
Hassan was very helpful and cooperating and took us to nice places, we enjoyed our time with him and we will take next time more tours with him!
I can highly recommend the experience and Alfred, our guide, was friendly and very knowledgeable. The view of the lakes was amazing from the mountain top. We could also see a herd of sheep being watered. We then went on to the waterfall, I recommend good shoes the stone can be slippery. Finally we went to Batroun. We had great lemonade, saw beautiful sights and learned about the history of the city and Lebanon.
Thank you, George! We're so glad you enjoyed the hidden gems of Lebanon with Alfred. Sounds like a perfect day—nature, history, and Batroun lemonade! Hope to see you again soon! 🌟
