Itinerary
Visiting the caves you can discover and appreciate all of the different eras that characterize the underground of Orvieto. Visitors will travel through history and down to a depth of almost 20 meters below street level, taking a trip back in time. In the lowest level of the caves you can admire a river bed with a petrified plant fossil from about 250,000 years ago. It was most likely carried by lava from the volcanic eruption of the ancient volcano where now sits the famous Bolsena lake. The discovery of Rita and Adriano has become one of the most important and appreciated historical testimonies to the heritage and archaeology of Orvieto. The aperitif includes savoury specialities and pastries and our red and white wine from the restaurant Il Labirinto.

You are walking down a lot of steps to get to the cave and it is a little chilly. Our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate in explaining the details of the cave and her family’s history in finding the cave. After the exceptional tour you are treated to a beautifully set table. You are able to taste two local wines with a delicious plate of appetizers. Afterwards you are delighted with a delicious dessert. This tour, food and wine were amazing! We felt so very spoiled.
Wonderful experience enjoying aperitif in cave following a short tour and explanation of their underground.
This was so cool. They provided a little tour of the underground under their restaurant and a nice tasting of charcuterie and wine and a dessert wine and dessert seated in the caves. The food was great and the staff very friendly.
Thank you very much for your kind review! We’re so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the tour of Assisi and that Alessandra’s explanations were clear and engaging throughout the experience. A guide’s ability to communicate well truly makes a difference, and we’re happy she helped make your visit enjoyable and easy to follow.
The caves go back to 5 BC, our guide filled us with information. Setting there having wine & in an incredible environment, we will never forget. Every moment of this experience will be treasured. We highly recommend this experience. We’ve visited other caves but this was definitely our highlight.
Amazing experience, stunning caves and delicious tasting/aperitivo! You get so much more than you would expect, we were lucky enough to get a private Tour of these family-owned caves, with An amazing history and very sweet and giving People. The aperitivo afterwards was more a lunch than just some snacks, delicious and left us stuffed. Big recommendation!
Interesting caves below the city, excellent apertivo/ wine combination. The food was beautiful and a real surprise!
What a unique experience. We ventured down into the caves below the restaurant where we had a short tour of the passages below. Our host provided some wonderful tales about the caves (although I think a few items could have been expanded on). We then had the joy of wine tasting and sampling some local foods down in the caves on our own. The food was great as was the wine. The overall experience was delightful.
We enjoyed our tour and aperitifs in the underground cave. The food was outstanding! The tour was just the 2 of us and our guide, we had a lovely time.
There was no tour of the caves. We were invited to look around on our own. Eventually, a woman came down to the cave and was with us for 5 minutes. She basically explained that the caves were for a cistern and pretty much everything in the cave was fake and modern. Although the aperatifs and wine were good, we felt rushed. They wanted us to eat in the cave, but it was very cold, so they gave us a table in the restaurant. Then the man working there was rushing us out the door. A waste of time and money.
Dear Susan, perhaps you did not read what you bought properly. You bought an aperitif in the cave (and there is no sun warming in the caves), nowhere does it say it was a tour. Even in the voucher it says that the ticket and aperitif are included, I don't understand where you read that there was a tour. Against the ticket you can visit all the caves and stay as long as you want, if you felt cold unfortunately it is not up to us. It would be better to learn to read well what you buy, before writing reviews that have nothing to do with the chosen experience.
What an amazing experience to spend time in a maze of caves! The atmosphere was amazing and the hospitality was equally wonderful. The wine was delicious and the snacks all typical Umbrian and plentiful. The restaurant upstairs was full but they still made us feel like honored guests.
