Alaska Railroad Anchorage to Seward Round-Trip Same Day Return

Description

Departing from downtown Anchorage, the Coastal Classic Train travels south along the rugged coastline of Turnagain Arm, with dramatic views of the Chugach Mountains plunging directly to the sea. At the end of Turnagain Arm, the tracks veer away from the road system into the backcountry wilderness – and what many consider to be the most scenic stretch of the Alaska Railroad, accessible only by train. Watch for views of massive glaciers, steep river canyons, and cascading waterfalls. The train arrives to Seward at 1115 am, allowing plenty of time to explore this charming port town – or opt to take a marine wildlife & glacier day cruise into the nearby Kenai Fjords – before departing on the return journey at 6 pm that evening, arriving back to Anchorage by 10:15 pm.

Gold Star View of Alaska!

The train from Anchorage to Seward to Anchorage was worth the time and money! The breathtaking scenery is just past your huge windows. The wildlife is iconic. Narration helped us understand the history of the railway and Alaska.

A Whistle blowing experience!

So much fun! My friend & I loved the ride. No watching for traffic, worrying about weather, or stopping for bathroom breaks & fuel. Great way to just relax & watch the scenery, while hearing a narrative about the areas. Thank you!

My favorite experience on earth

A relaxing, spectacular train trip through Alaskan untouched beauty…cliffs, inlets, mountains, glaciers, forest land…with moose, mountain goats, eagles, trumpeter swans…nowhere on earth can compare. Train is comfortable, quiet with a smooth 4 hour ride each direction. Excellent observation cars and smart, informative and funny tour guides. Alex and Hillary were fabulous! Food is yummy too! Vern the Conductor was absolutely The Best! We really enjoyed getting to know him…and to see how he inspires his young crew mates to be future train conductors/professionals too. Highly recommend Viator…tickets less expensive due to group rate but same service as buying from AK Railroad directly. Don’t miss this experience from Anchorage to Seward. Yes, this is the most interesting and beautiful part of the entire Alaska Rail Journey

On our first day, we went to Seward, did a whale-watching excursion and came back to Anchorage. Our second day, we went from Anchorage to Denali and stayed a couple days. On our fifth day we took the Alaska Rail from Denali to Fairbanks. We wouldn’t do that again. The scenery is fascinating on the journey from Anchorage to Seward, but we had trouble staying awake as we had flown in from Juneau late the night before. Our whale expedition was a short one because we had to be back at the train station in Seward around 5:00 p.m. The people who went on the long whale excursion saw lots of whales because they went out farther. So, don’t do this trip in one day. It is the most beautiful part. Despite what anybody tells you, you can’t see Denali from the train on the Anchorage to Denali; oh, it’s there, but you don’t know which one it is and it’s shrouded in clouds 90% of the time. Anchorage to Seward is the best run. It’s much slower than driving, but you see things that are not visible on the highway. We would take a cruise that ends in Whittier and take the train up to Anchorage from there (the rail merges just north of Seward). It was a great ride, the narrator talks the whole time and the food in Gold Star Service is like an inexpensive diner, but service is great.
