Description
The Alaska Native Heritage Center offers a unique experience for you to learn and explore the traditional and contemporary ways of Alaska’s Indigenous cultures. More than a museum, the Center is a place to engage and interact–to ask questions and discover. Our living cultures continue to flourish in a changing world, and although our world changes, our values and traditions remain. Your visit today will take you on a journey through 10,000 years of Alaska Native history and culture through art, dance, Native Games demonstrations, exhibits, traditional Native dwellings, films and more.
Tour Options
Itinerary
During your visit you will experience Alaska Native dancing, compelling Native Games demonstrations and Village Site tours. You will stroll through six authentic life-sized Native dwellings situated in a wooden area around beautiful Lake Tiulana. One of our Culture Bearers will introduce you to the traditional lifeways of the Inupiaq, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Athabascan, Eyak, Haida, Tsimshian, Tlingit, Unangax, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq, Yupik, and Cup'ik peoples.
Our re-imagined gift shop focuses exclusively on the sales of authentic Alaska Native arts. Ch’k’iqadi is a Dena’ina Athabascan word meaning “things we buy” and at the Gallery, you have the opportunity to buy art, jewelry and more from talented Alaska Native artists representing all regions and cultures of Alaska. We work to build a strong and sustainable place for our artists to sell their work for years to come. Your purchase directly supports our arts, cultures, and the Alaska Native artist community.

Wow! Just Wow! Absolutely best 5 hours of my day. Free shuttle to the Native Alaskan Heritage Center from Downtown Anchorage. Relaxed atmosphere to learn about the various Native Alaskan cultures. Don’t rush through the exhibits. Watch the videos/short movies. Take the guided tour, and talk to the local artists. Highly recommend adding this to your list of things to do.
Angelo was very informative, friendly and helpful.
The Heritage Center is a must see experience. Not only because it provides the historical background on the oppression Native people have experienced in America, but also because stories are told by the indigenous peoples themselves. The learning, guided tours, local artists, local performances; everything was excellent. Thank you for sharing your stories. I wished everyone could see this Center and learn history so history wouldn't continue to repeat itself. Humbled by this experience.
Great museum. Loved the demonstrations. Things to see inside as well as outside
This was a superior educational experience. The facility is one of the most lovely buildings I've been in. They have large "real life" exhibits along the garden walk outside the main building. There are very informative repeating presentations given on the main stage, often by very enthusiastic and knowledgeable youth. You really get a sense of the diversity in Native Alaskan cultures. And the history - timeline - as the main exhibit is eye opening (and tragic). It's a sad story, but I'm glad they're telling it.
The place is so interesting. I learned so much. It was so impressive how they made their tools, canoes, weapons and their homes out of the materials indigenous to their area. Loved the different examples of their homes depending on what region they lived in. I thought it was great how they use the younger generation as guides and to show examples of their native dance.
Outstanding experience with ongoing cultural activities since we arrived such as native games and dances as well as local artists showcasing their works. The tour by the lake is highly informative and everyone at the center was very friendly.
Worth the drive to immerse yourself in tribal history, tradition and experiences. Aesthetic and engaging displays; it enrages the soul while satisfying the senses.

$15 to get in during the winter, a wonderful experience to learn about native Alaskan culture. Multiple exhibits from various tribes/cultures and very nice staff. Awesome outdoor exhibits with recreations of dwellings from these native Alaskan cultures.
