Akureyri Northern Light Tour
Description
We pick you up from your hotel in the evening and together we go in search of the Northern Lights in a comfortable coach/mini bus. Named after the Roman goddess Aurora, these colourful lights swirl around the sky in a dramatic dance, leaving different patterns and shapes. We drive away from the electric street lights of Akureyri to more rural areas where there is a better chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Once we find the lights, we make sure you have enough time to take plenty of photographs. The Northern Lights have had a number of names throughout the history. The Greek´s called this phenomenon the “Dance of the Spirits”. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, these lights were commonly believed to be a sign from God. The old Icelandic folktale tell us about the angels dancing in heaven, their dresses were suppose to create these magnificent shapes of light in the sky.

Wonderful and fun northern lights tour. The northern lights are weather dependent, so viewing them is not guaranteed. Fortunately we were lucky and managed to see them. They are not easy to spot for the first time and usually need a trained eye to spot them, unless the solar activity is really really high. While we were looking for the northern lights, we also stopped by a frozen lake that we were able to walk on and slide across. Dress warmly as a large part of the time will be spent outside the car to see the lights, and it gets very cold (and windy) at night.

I can definitely recommend this tour company - the guide was knowledgeable and friendly, an excellent driver, and gave us plenty of information to keep us awake on the long drive. There were only three of us (plus the guide) on this tour but it never felt awkward. We were very lucky to see the Northern lights so well on our tour, and our guide made sure to let us know what was happening at all times (e.g. why we were moving from one spot to another, what he was looking for, what the lights were doing). We had a decent amount of time at both sites, it never felt like we were just stood around waiting (although it was freezing, so the hot chocolate was very much appreciated!).
We had a nice evening with Ingi and a small group of guests. The lights were already out by pick up time but fortunately in Akureyri, you don’t have to drive far to escape light pollution. Eventhough it was cloudy, we were still able to see the lights quite spectacularly. Ingi topped off the evening with snacks and hot drinks. Before leaving, I was very impressed that he checked the very dark and large field we were in thoroughly to make sure guests had not left anything behind! He also checked the van seats and under them when guests were leaving! I would have loved if the tour included some professional photo taking as sometimes we don’t always have the right equipment or skills to get nice photos in the dark. I could not find a tour operator that offered this in Akureyri.
The tour should of been cancelled weather was so bad And so foggy it should of gone ahead the following night it was clear
There are several northern light tour companies to choose from in Akureyri and we are so glad we decided on The Traveling Viking. The weather was cloudy in the evening and did not look promising, but we checked in and were assured our tour was going ahead. Our guide Lilja was wonderful, friendly, and very knowledgeable of the lights. She knew the side roads of Akureyri well and the quiet places for the best views. We were incredibly fortunate our night to have such a strong display of lights. Lilja helped us take photos and took several photos of us, which she sent to us the following day. Thank you Lilja for these memories!
Tour guide was very informative. She told us all about the Northern Lights and history of the area. Our tour was on Fri/Dec/27th and we lucked out and got spectacular Northern Lights pictures and video. Dress warm, the wind is strong!

We were picked up by Lilja and taken across the Fjord away from the lights of the city. She was very informative and as the moon was so bright began taking photos of the nights sky where she found the lights. We then drove to another location where they became even more visible. It was bitterly cold especially my feet so dress up warm. We were given hot chocolate and custard creams which helped. We had a lovely evening and she took some photos of us under the lights which she sent later. Lovely lady with a wicked sense of humour. I would definitely recommend.
We had the most incredible tour with our guide Lilja. We saw the Northern Lights within around half an hour and then enjoyed four stops with different views of the lights. Lilja was an expert guide and ensured that we had the best views of the lights throughout. She was also friendly and gave us an amazing insight into Icelandic culture. She also took some expert photos of us, which made the experience all the more memorable. I could not recommend this tour more highly and would like to thank Lilja for making our trip so special.
