The town's well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, cobblestone streets, and wooden stilt houses along the riverbanks offer a glimpse into its rich historical past. Notable structures include the East and North Ancient City Gates, as well as various temples, shrines, and museums, all embodying the essence of the ancient city. In 1992, the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, composed of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and two other major scenic spots, was inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List by UNESCO. The area's remarkable geological features were further recognized in 2004 when it was named a Global Geopark.
