Description

Gorilla tracking is acknowledged as Uganda’s most wanted subsequent to tourism activity.  Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Reserve was set up in 1942 and later on renovated to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 1992.In 1994, it was acknowledged as the world Heritage site. Rukiga is a language commonly spoke in this area and the word Bwindi in realty means Impenetrable. What makes Bwindi Impenetrable is the fact that it covers an area of about 327km2 of scrambled vegetation draped over an intensively fissures landscape of the steep, haughty ridges as well as the slippery valleys and high. The terrain may be hard for you to manage but remember it’s what makes Africa an exciting continent. The park has a big population of gorillas.Bwindi is well known to be very cold in the morning and at night. The coolest months are usually June and July and the average temperature is about 70c-200c.

A lifetime memory

What an amazing experience! The hotel takes care of all of the arrangements - all you have to do is get yourself to the bush plane check in desk in Entebbe (located at the international airport) and they take care of the rest. The lodge is gorgeous and comfortable plus tucked away into the jungle. The actual gorilla trek is a once in a lifetime experience. I'm 70 but in fairly good shape. Had two porters to help me hike up the mountain to see the gorillas in their nest. Spent an hour with the family of gorillas. My friend who isn't in the best of health was also able to see the gorillas because there is a nest close to town - about a 20 minute walk down the road, so she was able to experience seeing the gorillas in their habitat as well. In fact the gorilla center does a good job making sure all levels of people can experience seeing the gorillas. In my friend's group there was also a woman in a wheelchair and a 90 year old lady who they put in what I call a Cleopatra chair with 4 porters hoisting her up to walk down the road to see the gorillas. Such a wonderful opportunity for everyone. The service and food at the hotel are excellent. They offer other local excursions. We did a local tour to an orphanage, a woman's center that teaches women who have lost their spouses a new skill so they can support themselves plus we watched someone make coffee, banana beer and banana gin. Yes we tasted the gin. Tastes just like moonshine! The only drawback is that it is about an hour drive down a bumpy road from Kihihi airport and the hotel/Bwindi Spend the money and go!

You must do this!

It was through a company called Natural Habitat, organized by Jill and Brian of One World Dive and Travel. Both are higher end travel companies, but well worth it. They make sure you know exactly what you are responsible for and what they are responsible for and take care of every trip detail. Remember those companies: Natural Habitat and One World Dive and Travel. Just before the first trek, I hurt my foot and couldn’t put any pressure on it. I was thinking I came all this way only to stay back at the lodge, but two guides lifted me for the entire trek, through rough, steep, densely wooded, lush green and slippery terrain. Everyone was so nice, professional and informative. If I had the money I would go again! Regarding the gorilla trekking, it was one of the most memorable trips I’ve ever been on. You can see a family’s dynamics. We saw them napping and waking up, hugging and grooming. We saw adults and youngsters having discussions and disagreements. We saw infants gently held and being cared for by parents. We saw toddlers tumbling with each other and being disciplined when they got too disruptive with an adult. When adult gorillas looked into my eyes (yes, you get that close), I felt them reaching in and touching my heart strings. You can sense their plight. If you don’t feel anything, then you have no soul. Just go!
