Description

Easily one of the best art museum in the world, with works spanning 6 continents and over 6,000 years, the Metropolitan is so vast you could easily spend days inside. If you don’t have days to spare, our Met Express Tour cuts to the core. Your 2-hour tour starts when you meet your guide and small group of no more than 15 people at the entrance to the Met. The small group size ensures that you can ask all the questions you want and never miss a word of what your guide is saying. After a brief intro, it’s off to find some of the most bizarre and quirky pieces hidden within the enormous collection. A hippo with a limp? Check. A wardrobe malfunction from ancient Egypt? Yup. There’s even some kinky flemish dinnerware (if age appropriate, of course). You’ll also get the funny and fascinating backstories on more famous works and learn about the wild lives of artists like Monet and Van Gogh. Don’t forget about the butt-themed scavenger hunt; prepare yourself accordingly.

Our tour starts in Ancient Egypt, beholding perfectly preserved ancient Egyptian tomb models. See tiny dioramas that show what life was like in the times of Tutankhamen and learn about the fascinating burial rituals of the era. You’ll understand a little more of this at our next stop, Egyptian mummies and “William,” the Met’s “mascot.” Next, onto a prize jewel of the Met Museum, the Temple of Dendur, an Ancient Egyptian Temple right smack in the middle of Central Park. More rumors abound at two of the next pieces we see – the armor of Britain’s infamous King Henry VIII, and the Antioch Chalice, purported by some as, ‘The Holy Grail.” We’ll see more ancient works of Greek statuary and Roman frescoes before moving to the exotic, with a stop in Papua New Guinea. We’ll then head to the second floor to soak in some of Claude Monet’s famous Water Lillies, be energized by the expressive works of Vincent Van Gogh, and be inspired by a bronze of Rodin’s Thinker.

Fun historical tour

The tour was a good way to see highlights of the MET, which is vey big - 25 connected buildings. Our guide provide history about the MET and explained some of the varying architecture. We ended up staying after the tour to see some of the items he mentioned that were not part of the tour.

If you're late

I was 10 minutes late and the tour group was gone from the original meet up point by the time I arrived. I tried to get in contact with the company to see if I could join the group but no response. It was money down the drain. I should have been allowed to join the group. Instead, I had to wait in line, pay my own ticket (again) and I got to explore the museum at my own pace. I ended up seeing all the art I wanted.

Very Knowledgeable

Jett was personable, concise and easy to follow. He gave just enough but not too much information. I've visited the Museum 10+ times but was unaware of the things that Jett opened my eyes to.

Highlights and informational

It’s fun to have a tour from someone who’s so clearly enjoys the subject. Our leader, John, just thoroughly enjoys all of the arts sharing it with people.
