Willkommen in Rajarata ! (Die Grafschaft des Königs oder Das Land der Könige) Wir beginnen unseren Tag vom Vessagiriya-Waldkloster, das eine der beiden ältesten buddhistischen Mönche ist, die auf der Insel leben. In Vessagiriya werden die Gäste beginnen, tief in die alte singhalesische Zivilisation einzutauchen, die mit Buddhismus, Landwirtschaft, bildender Kunst, Architektur, Handel, internationalen Beziehungen und Wunderwerken der Zauberbinderei genährt ist, und dort erhalten Sie eine Vorstellung davon, wie Anuradhapura in seiner goldenen Ära von Anfang an aussah.
Versteckt auf der Seite einer Felswand im Ran Masu Uyana (Königlicher Goldfischpark) zwischen dem Tissa Wewa und dem Isurumuniya Felsentempel in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka ist ein einzigartiges Artefakt des alten Sri Lanka, das lokal als „Bawa Chakraya“ oder „Sakwala Chakraya“ bekannt ist.
Der Sri Maha Bodhi Baum (auch "Ficus Religiosa" oder "Ficus Bodhi Tree" genannt) gilt als erster der acht heiligen Orte in Anuradhapura. Dies ist der rechte Zweig des Sri Maha Bodhi Baumes in Bodh Gaya in Indien, unter dem der Asket Siddhartha die Erleuchtung erlangte, und wurde von Kaiser Ashoka durch seine geliebte Tochter, die buddhistische Nonne Theri Sanghamitta, auf Anfrage des singhalesischen Königs Devanampiyatissa im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. geschickt. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt wurde es von aufeinanderfolgenden Königen, Mönchen, Nonnen und Laienbuddhisten verehrt, da es eine lebendige Verbindung zum Gautama Buddha ist. Insbesondere ist allgemein anerkannt, dass es sich um den ältesten von Menschen gepflanzten lebenden Baum der Welt mit den längsten schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen handeln würde und derzeit fast 2300 Jahre alt ist.
Im Norden oder am Heiligen Bodhi-Baum können wir eine riesige Sammlung stehender Granitsäulen beobachten, die als das baufällige Gebäude des alten dreisten Palastes identifiziert wurde, der einst als Verwaltungszentrum des alten Maha Vihara Klosterkomplexes diente, der unter der Führung von Großkönig Gamini Abhaya im 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr., einem Enkel von König Devanampiyatissa, erbaut wurde. Es war ein neunstöckiges Gebäude mit 1000 verschiedenen Kammern. Der Name Brazen Palce leitet sich davon ab, dass sein Dach mit Kupferziegeln reetgedeckt war.
Ruwanveliseya Stupa, auch bekannt als Ratnamali oder als Mahathupa ( Th Great Stupa) wurde unter der Führung von Great Kind Gamini Abhaya im zweiten Jahrhundert v. Chr. gebaut. Die Chroniken beschreiben fantastisch die Einweihungszeremonie dieser Stupa als großes Fest, das in Anuradhapura unter Teilnahme von geladenen Gästen sogar aus anderen Ländern als Diplomaten abgehalten wurde. Sie wurde jedoch während der Chola-Invasion im 10. Jahrhundert n. Chr. zerstört und erhielt im 12. Jahrhundert n. Chr. von König Parakkramabahu dem Größten ihre ursprüngliche Pracht zurück. Was wir heute jedenfalls sehen, ist die jüngste restaurierte Form, die 1940 von der Ratnamali Stupa Development Society fertiggestellt wurde, was zuerst von Ehrw. Naranvita Sumanasara Thero im Jahr 1873, als er es zu seinem alten Glanz zurückgeben wollte.
Dieses malerische Paar Teiche, die auf dem Boden gebaut wurden, sind zweifellos exquisite Exemplare der Landschaftsarchitektur und natürlich ein wunderbares Hydrauliksystem, das nicht nur die Talente, sondern auch das ästhetische Gespür dieser großartigen Menschen zeigt.
Das ist wirklich so etwas wie ein modernes Dampfbad, aber das war nicht nur, um Dampfbaden mit warmem Wasser zu genießen, sondern von einem gut entwickelten sinhalesischen Medikament, das im 4. Jahrhundert n. Chr. durchgeführt wurde. Dort können wir diskutieren, wie es funktionierte und wie Kranke Mönche in der Abhayagiriya Universität ihre Hauterkrankungen heilten.
Dort sehen wir wieder eine große Granitmulde in Form von Kanuständen mit einem erstaunlichen Tiefdruck in den Refektoriumsräumen des Abhayagiriya-Klosters. Der chinesische Mönch Fa-hsien, der im 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr. an der Abhayagiriya-Universität studierte, berichtete, dass es 5000 buddhistische Mönche im Kloster gab und diese spezielle Mulde ausreichend Reis für eine solche Anzahl aufnehmen konnte.
Dies ist eines der schönsten Kunstwerke in Sri Lanka stammt etwa aus dem 8. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Und dieses Meisterwerk zeigt kostbar den ästhetischen Sinn der antiken Handwerker und wie unglaublich sie ihr Wissen, Können, Talente, Gefühle umgesetzt haben.
Dies ist bei den Einheimischen im Volksmund als Eth-Pokuna oder im Englischen als Elephant Pond bekannt, südwestlich des Refektoriums befindet sich vielleicht der größte künstlich angelegte Teich Asiens, der im 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. angelegt wurde. Es heißt, dass dies dreimal größer ist als ein modernes olympisches Schwimmbad. Das Wunder hier ist nicht nur seine enorme Größe, sondern auch die unterirdischen Leitungen, die immer noch funktionieren und den Teich von nahegelegenen Stauseen mit Wasser versorgt haben. In der südwestlichen Ecke können wir eine Zisternenschleuse feststellen, die darauf hindeutet, dass Wasser auf andere relativ kleinere Teiche in der Umgebung verteilt wurde, was die hervorragenden Wasserbaufähigkeiten der alten Singhalesen zeigt.
Der Mondstein ist eine weitere schönste und atemberaubendste Schöpfung des antiken Bildhauers. Es dient als Fußmatte am Fuße einer Treppe zu einem buddhistischen Schrein, aber der Bildhauer verwandelt es in ein Kunstwerk von höchster Qualität.

I had an outstanding guided tour in Anuradhapura and can highly recommend it. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history of the ancient city. His understanding of archaeology, architecture, and Buddhist philosophy was impressive, and he explained everything in a structured, engaging way. Lucky was an amazing guide. He has deep knowledge of Buddhism, history and archaeology and brought the stones and sights to life. His English is excellent and he tells lots of stories. The day started with an overview of the life of Buddha and his teachings- and, importantly, how they relate to Buddhism as practiced today. As we explored the amazing sights, Lucky would point out interesting details and relate them to the bigger picture that he was building. We also visited Mihinthale to finish the day which was a great add on. I highly recommend Lucky as a guide.
