Ein Historiker enthüllt die Verbindung zwischen der gebauten Umwelt des modernen Berlins und der dunklen und oft verborgenen Geschichte. Sie erfahren mehr über das Leben unter kommunistischer Herrschaft, den wachsenden Unmut der ostdeutschen Bevölkerung und ihre brutale Unterdrückung durch die Regierung.

Ein Historiker wird den Dialog zwischen der gebauten Umwelt des modernen Berlins und seiner dunklen und oft verborgenen Geschichte offenbaren. Sie werden von einem Leben unter kommunistischer Herrschaft, der wachsenden Unzufriedenheit der Ostdeutschen und der brutalen Unterdrückung ihrer Regierung hören. Die Tour beginnt am Brandenburger Tor, wo Präsident Ronald Reagan im Juni 1987 den sowjetischen Ministerpräsidenten Michail Gorbatschow aufforderte, "diese Mauer niederzureißen!" In der Nähe befindet sich die ehemalige sowjetische Botschaft, ein grandioses Denkmal, das 1945 inmitten der Trümmer der Welt errichtet wurde Der Zweite Weltkrieg als kühne Erklärung von Stalins Ehrgeiz, ganz Berlin zu kontrollieren. Wir werden diskutieren, wie die Aufteilung Deutschlands in vier Teile durch die Alliierten nach dem Krieg zu jahrzehntelangen Spannungen im Kalten Krieg geführt hat.
Der Bahnhof Friedrichstraße, ein wichtiger Grenzübergang zwischen Ost- und Westberlin. Als die Familien durch die ostdeutschen Einwanderungsgesetze mit eisernen Fäusten auseinander gerissen wurden, verabschiedeten sie sich hier im Büro, das als Palast der Tränen bekannt ist.
Am Nordbahnhof werden wir untersuchen, wie die Berliner Abteilung "Geisterstationen" geschaffen hat, ungenutzte, aber stark bewachte Haltestellen in Westberlins U-Bahnlinien, die auf ostdeutschem Gebiet liegen.
Wir besuchen die grandiose, kilometerlange Wohnanlage, die als Karl-Marx-Allee bekannt ist, und überlegen, wie sich die Träume der Ostdeutschen nach einem sozialistischen Paradies in einen Albtraum der Entbehrung, Unterdrückung und Paranoia verwandelt haben.
In der Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer können Sie den berüchtigten Todesstreifen erleben und Geschichten von Ostberlinern hören, deren Fluchtversuche zu ihrem tragischen Tod geführt haben.
Die berüchtigte Stasi, die Geheimpolizei der DDR, zwang Nachbarn und Familienmitglieder, sich gegenseitig auszuspionieren. In der ehemaligen Stasi-Zentrale erfahren Sie, wie der gefürchtete Anführer Eric Mielke ein riesiges Netzwerk von Spionen rekrutierte und innovative Überwachungstechniken entwickelte.
Wir besuchen das Zentrum des öffentlichen Lebens in Ostberlin, den Alexanderplatz, der in den 1960er Jahren mit Denkmälern wie dem futuristischen Parlamentsgebäude und dem legendären Fernsehturm umgebaut wurde. 1989 war dieses Symbol des ostdeutschen Stolzes Schauplatz massiver Demonstrationen, die zum Sturz des Regimes führten und 40 Jahre kommunistischer Herrschaft zu Ende brachten.

Our wonderful guide Dan masterfully presented the history of Berlin's division during the Cold War in an interesting but also humorous way which completely captured the attention of our 13 year old budding history buff. It was an amazing tour and we covered a lot in the span of time allotted. Definitely would recommend to anyone interested in history, art and architecture of the city.

This tour was the highlight of a 5-day stay in Berlin. It was intimate and conversational. We chose the tour for the small size and, exactly as we hoped, we got to ask loads of questions and learn what we specifically cared about. We were also very moved by our guide's personal stories of his in-law's family's life behind the iron curtain and by the ghost stations.

Martin was great, so engaging, answering all our questons. He lived through divided Berlin and was able to offer a very personal account of the iron curtain in addition to his helping us grasp the monuments but also subtle, small things in the city. We would have missed so many signs of the former separation if he hadn't been with us. Great host and storyteller.
The Berlin of today as only the faintest scar of the actual division of the the city. It's more like a commercial memory. This tour really shed light not only on the jarring juxtaposition of life in the former East vs West Berlin, but gave me a clearer understanding of what it must have been like growing on one side of the wall or the other.

Historically, Berlin is multilayered and dense. Effortlessly informed guide. Respect for objective facts. Arduous when you're standing for 3 hours but definitely worth it; we had lunch beforehand and a place to go afterward.
