I have done many food tours all over the world and this was, by far the worst. Not only was it underwhelming for food quality and information provided, but it was way overpriced. Advertised as a VIP access experience, there was nothing even remotely VIP about it except the price. Specifically, we were left standing on the curb and handed a gluten free cinnamon roll that was inedible. Another stop we were in the botanical gardens and handed one piece of licorice candy; then another we at a candy shop where we sat on a bench outside and were told to be silent and given one piece of hard candy…no access to the history or candy-making. We did have a beer at one stop, then open face sandwiches to share at another, then the highlight of a hotdog truck. The final stop was a couple chocolates that were of marginal quality. Sorry for being negative, but this tour needs some revamping.
Everything about this tour was underwhelming...the food, the portions, the VIP experience. For the price of this tour we expected better. The food quality was very so so and 4 of the "8 tastings" included the following: a piece of chocolate covered licorice which we ate a park (they were tasty and I would have liked another one but the guide put the package back in his backpack after carefully doling one per person), a single piece of hard candy (where we were told to sit quietly and only whisper outside the store while sampling the single candy), a stop at a bar for a beer (which lasted 45 minutes for some reason) and a stop at a chocolate shop (where we had 2 bits of sweet treats that were not tasty at all). The open faced sandwiches are presented on a tray and must be cut in half and shared with others. Most stops included standing in crowded areas while eating the VIP Access foods. Sadly, the hot dog stand was the highlight of this food tour.
This walking food tour included spa for traditional Danish foods like Smorebrod and street vendor hot dogs. Who knew there were so many choices for the dogs including goat sausage and a vegetarian option? And so many toppings. That was a treat. One down side was that we stopped to sample beer (there were over 30 on tap) before we ate the hot dogs. I really needed that beer after the dog. Another complaint is the "Danish" pastry we were given was vegan. I have nothing against vegans but the pastry was dry and barely edible. Why not give us a real traditional pastry instead of touting a politically correct one? Or guide spoke perfect English (she was from Australia) which helped.
Our guide Anne was fantastic and every stop on the tour was delicious and tour was informative!
Extremely disappointing experience. The description on Viator is highly exaggerated. There was absolutely nothing gastronomic, nor "VIP" about it. The price is excessive for what is offered. One of the stops consisted of eating half a brioche, with the portions piled on top of each other on the same plate where all the participants had to serve themselves with their hands. Another stop was limited to a small piece of candy and two pieces of chocolate, one of which was tiny. The whole thing felt more like a tour of merchants looking to make extra sales than a true culinary experience. Furthermore, the itinerary included many detours that seemed mainly to serve to stretch the activity over four hours, to the detriment of the time that could be spent discovering the many attractions of this magnificent city. I recommend choosing a city tour instead, then going to eat at a good local restaurant, or opting for another culinary tour that offers a more authentic, more generous experience and presents a much better value for money.
Genevieve, I’m sorry the tour did not match what you were hoping for. I do, however, disagree with the description of it as a “tourist trap”. The tastings are carefully chosen to show a broad range of Danish food culture - including high-quality cheese at Arla Unika, an organic Danish hot dog, traditional pastry from one of Copenhagen’s respected bakeries, chocolate, and beer from a venue with a choice of 48 taps. Several of the places we visit are not tourist-trap venues. Two of the stops are places where we have special access for our guests, and venues such as Café Ølhalle and SKAAL are also very much part of local Copenhagen food and beer culture. A food tour is different from a restaurant tasting menu, and some tastings are naturally served as shared plates during the walk. That format may not have been what you expected, but it is a normal part of this kind of guided food experience. We will still review the Viator wording to make sure the format, walking and tasting style are as clear as possible before booking. Best regards, Peter
Outstanding experience. We booked for 2 adults by mistake and had 2 kids as well. They accommodated us with no charge and gave us so much love and respect. Our guide Megan was superlative and insightful. Places visited were top notch and high quality. Enough walking is involved for you to not feel guilty while you eat your way through the afternoon in a beautiful city.
Amit, thank you for this. I’m glad Megan made the afternoon feel welcoming and insightful, and that the team could help with the children. I’ll make sure she sees your words. Best regards, Peter
More walking than we anticipated, but overall very good tour. Great selection of food. Lots of interesting anecdote.
Debra, thank you - good to hear you enjoyed the food selection and the stories. We’ll also keep the walking expectation in mind, as that is useful feedback for how the tour is described. Best regards, Peter
Thoroughly enjoyed learning about Copenhagen’s rich gastronomic and cultural history from Peter. We spent about four hours sampling cuisine native to the area and learning about their significance, making a few brief detours to beautiful parks and landmarks. Peter was very knowledgeable and personable making it a wonderful day with my family. Would highly recommend.
Our guide Peter will appreciate this. I’m glad the tastings, parks, landmarks and Copenhagen food history made it a good day with your family, Stephany. Best, Peter
Bonnie was a delightful guide. She provided history of the city and the foods we tasted. There was great variety. We would highly recommend her tour!
Bonnie will be very happy to read this, Jill. Great to hear her guiding, the history and the variety of tastings worked well for you. Best, Peter
Excellent tour and excellent guide!
Really appreciate this. Good to hear both the tour and guide worked well. Best, Peter
