This was such a unique night. Chef Rob makes delicious food, but the experience is so much more than just a typical meal. Each course brought different flavours from different Montreal cuisines and a story to bring them all together. The energy in the room, the communal Chef’s table in view of the kitchen, and the stylish Old Port atmosphere were just superb. I recommend this for anyone who cares about not just dining, but also culture.
I gave this as a gift for family. Although they had a good time because of the other guests that were present they did not enjoy the food. The duck dish was inedible. Tough to cut let alone eat. For the cost of dinner I would think a different more friendly menu would have been chosen. The wines were excellent thank goodness.
That is interesting because 3 other sets of guests left 5-star reviews, and several of those singled out the duck - served medium rare, on exact 55C internal temperature - as the best one. There were 4 other courses with ingredients that are easily likable - pork belly, artisanal cheese, asparagus. You had a great time. Loved the wines. Mentioned only 1 course and left a 2 star review (also claiming to represent other customers). We have to heartily disagree and we are also sorry that rather than simply say "Chef, we are not really into duck" or "Chef, can you cook it more rare," to which we would have said "of course, " give us a few minutes. Instead, you felt the need to publicly disparage a small business trying to make it based on incomplete information, or worse, claimed hearsay from other people. It sounds to us like you maybe have never had duck before and are not comfortable with it and that is ok. This is hospitality, after all, it is about sharing, positivity, and making the best of the moment. We're sorry you chose not to go this route.
We attended this dinner on December 25th, Christmas Day, and it costs far more than it is worth. First of all, it is located on the 4th floor of an old, dirty building with no elevator. Instead of napkins, they give you kitchen rags. Wine glasses are not changed when switching wines; in fact, the “chef” even asks diners to rinse their own glasses and pour the water into a plastic container. The food is merely good, but well below what the chef boasts about. On top of that, he treats his assistant in a demeaning manner. The only positive aspect of the evening was the other guests at the table, who were very kind—a family from Germany and another from the U.S. The chef made inappropriate comments regarding the guests’ nationalities and even demonstrated his ignorance by stating that Mexico is not in North America. He refused to shake hands with my son’s girlfriend, who was the one who made the reservation. When I asked for a particular wine that he was serving, he refused, arguing that I could taste it with the diner next to me—yet he also refused to give that wine to the other diner, despite the fact that we paid a significant amount for the wine pairing. Throughout the evening, the chef repeatedly claimed he had spent a lot on our ingredients and beverages, but in reality he serves cheap cider and the ingredients are not what he claims them to be. I am writing this review because, at the end of the dinner, after everyone had left, I kindly offered the chef some feedback, and he rudely told me to post a review instead. Honestly, Montreal is full of excellent restaurants and real chefs who are truly worth it—so look for another option.
We are so sorry you feel the need to go beyond criticism and endeavour to personally insult others. 3/4 of the parties on your night left 5 star reviews - so we agree to disagree. No one made any disparaging comments about another person, whatsoever. Our Chef cooks a 5-course meal for 14-people alone - that is 70 plates, over 100 ingredients, 40+ pieces of cutlery, which makes it very hard to talk with guests when a busy night. As for shaking hands, while cooking we cannot shake hands as then would transfer bacteria. Thousands of bistros in Paris, NYC, and here use kitchen towels as they indicate a connection to cooking and homey-ness. We are sorry, but these are exaggerated accusations and misunderstandings. We are creatives who work freelance and can't afford a luxury building wth a door person - and your comments imply that those who can't afford perfect things are less-then. Montreal buildings are old and don't invest in public spaces. Further, what makes our space unique is precisely b/c it is an artist's loft - a pure expression of our city's creativity and edge. We are sorry that the limits of our class/tax bracket do not match yours, but we will not apologize for that. WE do agree an edgy, home cooking-inspired supper club is not the right match. And that is OK with us.
Super food and chef! The stories about each course were great. I would recomend to anyone who loves food!
An enjoyable experience that had pros and cons Pros: The food was great, excellent use of seasoning that created an interesting blend of flavors. Plated presentation was good. The chef is well trained and knowledgeable. Con’s: It’s called a Supper Club but it is really a Pop Up in a friends kitchen The location is a run down 4 story apartment building. You have to climb to the 4th floor (8 stair sections) which were not very clean. It seemed over priced since most, not all, of the ingredients were fairly simple and available. The $250 Canadian bottle of red wine was $62 Canadian at a local liquor store the next morning.
The food here was honestly really good — you can tell the chef knows what they’re doing. Everything came out fresh, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. I was super impressed with the cooking! That said, the setting just didn’t match the quality of the food. The space felt a bit tight and not very comfortable for a sit-down dinner. It kind of took away from the overall experience. I’d definitely come back for the food, but I really hope they improve the atmosphere — the chef’s food deserves a better setup.
We are very sorry you felt we deserved a D-, but for us 1-chef, 2-table, private culinary experiences in which the Chef cooks, serves, and narrates every course are about, well, food - not decor. If design and fanciness is what you seek, there are lots of restaurants focused on scene in this and other cities. SPACE SIZE - The space was seated for 13 people in a 1200 square foot space. A restaurant of similar size and bistro-concept (and I know this because I have opened/designed dozens) would seat 40-55 people (google 1200 sf and restaurant size to see). So we are not sure how that qualifies as tight. CHEF TABLE - We also sit everyone right next to the kitchen - Chef's Table style - so they can see the action. FOR SCENE - We recommend the following restaurants/lounges where scene and expensive decor are integral - Big in Japan, Grinder, Yoko Luna. Have a delicious fall. THE SPACE - our current pop-up space is incredibly original - the studio of an abstract painter and costume designer. We cannot afford something fancy, sadly though, given our small business size. DECOR/VS. FOOD IMPORTANCE - Finally, if decor matters that much, why does Michelin give stars to dirty outdoor street food places? For us, your need for fanciness is a personal preference we disagree with and objective data in design and critique refutes as well. But, the really sad thing is a review of this few stars will hurt our small business greatly for a period of weeks until it is buried by others. You had 2.5 hours to express issues in person and did not say a word - if you had, we would have created more space for you. immediately. But if that helps you feel validated then we are happy for you!
Great experience. Chef Rob shares the diversity of Montreal's culture through a culinary experience. I met two very interesting couples, and it was a great time. Highly unique and even quirky, but I like quirky. To address some of the negative comments on Viator, please note that this is a tasting menu, not an all-you-can-eat buffet. The focus is on quality, not quantity. Think tapas portions. Also, the venue may, and probably will, change based on the number of participants. At my tasting, it was me and two other couples, so it was moved to an artist's loft just blocks away from the original location. This was more interesting and intimate. Chef Rob prefers to communicate via WhatsApp, and you get a flurry of messages the day before, finalizing the location and time. Finally, some have mentioned Chef Rob's demeanor. He is very focused, so you need to ask questions if he doesn't introduce himself or explain a food completely. He's very open and very direct. It's all part of the experience. Enjoy it!
I booked this as part of a get-away for my wife and my 10th anniversary. I'm definitely more of an introvert so showing up to a bit of a 'clandestine' location to meet up with a handful of strangers wasn't my idea of a good time, but I wanted to do something special for my wife so I sucked it up. Thank God I did. The food was phenomenal, Chef Rob told some really interesting stories and the other people we ate with became our short-term best friends. It was a really great time and I'm incredibly glad we did it. I would recommend it to anyone.
Loved the artsy space and the flavors reflecting different communities in Montreal. Definitely something to try for those seeking a more personal dining experience with a passionate chef.
Wonderful and delicious. Funky setting, very knowledgeable chef. Recommend this to any foodies coming to Montreal.
