Das Große Meteoronenkloster ist das größte und älteste von allen. Es wurde das Kloster genannt, das "in der Luft schwebte" (Meteoro), wegen der Bildung des gigantischen Felsens, auf dem es errichtet wurde. Das Große Meteoro-Kloster wurde von Saint Athanasios dem Meteoriten gegründet, dem ersten Klostergründer und Organisator des systematischen Koenovion. Aus diesem Grund wird die Gründung dieses Klosters als ein Wendepunkt oder besser der Beginn des organisierten Klosters in der Heiligen Meteora betrachtet. Hosios Athanasios wurde um 1302 in der mittelalterlichen Stadt New Patras geboren. Die heutige Hypati war Andronikos.
Das heilige Kloster von Varlaam ist das zweitgrößte Kloster. Es befindet sich gegenüber des Großen Meteoro-Klosters und wurde Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts von dem ausübenden Hosios Varlaam gegründet. Das elegante Kloster Catholicon wurde 1541-42 zu Ehren Agioi Pantes von zwei Brüdern aus Ioannina, den Priestermönchen Hosioi Theophanes und Nectarios the Apsarades erbaut. Die Hauptkirche wurde im Jahr 1548 dekoriert. Nach stilistischen Kriterien wird dieses prächtige Wandgemälde dem berühmten Hagiographen aus Thebes, Frago Catelano, zugeschrieben.
Das Kloster der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit (Agia Triada) ist am schwersten zu erreichen, aber wenn Sie ganz oben angekommen sind, ist der Panoramablick auf die Umgebung einfach faszinierend! Dieses Kloster befindet sich in der Nähe des Sankt-Stephanus-Klosters und liegt auf einem steilen und prächtigen Felsen. Es wurde bereits seit dem Jahr 1362 Kloster organisiert, wie in einem Dokument von Symeon Uressis Palaeologos angegeben. Besucher müssen einem Pfad folgen, der sie zunächst an den Fuß des Felsens führt, bevor sie etwa 140 Stufen hochgehen.
Das heilige Kloster des Heiligen Nikolaus von Anapafsas ist das erste Kloster, dem wir auf dem Weg zur Heiligen Meteora begegnen. Es wurde am Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts gegründet. Für den Namen Anapafsas gibt es zahlreiche Interpretationen, von denen zwei die beliebtesten sind. Die erste ist, dass der Name Anapafsas von einem der Wohltäter des Klosters vergeben wurde, während sich die zweite Erklärung darauf bezieht, dass die Position des Klosters die erste ist, die auf dem Weg nach oben angetroffen wurde, und die wahrscheinlich den Pilgern und anderen Besuchern als Rast diente platzieren, bevor es weitergeht.

Despite it being a long day (4 hours each way and 14.5 hours overall), I thoroughly recommend doing this trip. The views of the monasteries on top of the rock formations are breathtaking. The guide was informative, the coach comfortable and the lunch was good.

This tour was everything we needed. Comfortable transportation, safe driver and excellent guide. Plenty of stops and time to take wonderful photo oppertunities. Lunch and Dinner breaks were adequate, although the food and service was mediocre, and to be expected when dealing with large coach numbers, throughput was the main objective of the restaurant. Ordering the food ahead of time was seamless. 10 hours of driving time to consider when booking this trip but the endpoint was worth the drive.

Experience was excellent, length of visit was appropriate and comfortable. crowd size was suitable to our needs, Katarina was excellent in her interactions with all of us, and she was knowledgable about rock formation, caves and monsteries.
