Meteora ist ein Gebiet von wenigen Quadratkilometern, in dem eine uralte Klostergemeinschaft und ein seltenes geologisches Phänomen riesiger Steinsäulen in absoluter Harmonie nebeneinander existieren. Meteora liegt an der Nordwestspitze der Ebene von Thessalien und ist heute zu einem der beliebtesten Reiseziele auf dem griechischen Festland geworden. Es ist ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe, eine archäologische Stätte und ein offiziell anerkannter heiliger Ort! Am Fuße der Felsen gibt es zwei Siedlungen, die Stadt Kalabaka und das Dorf Kastraki.
Es ist eine sehenswerte Kirche, nicht nur wegen ihres Alters und ihrer byzantinischen Fresken aus dem 11. Jahrhundert, sondern auch wegen des Baumaterials der Wände. In die Mauer sind Relikte eines antiken griechischen Tempels, der Gott Apollo gewidmet ist, eingebettet. In seinem Inneren kann man auch auf den älteren Mosaikboden achten, der an bestimmten Stellen unterhalb des aktuellen Bodens sichtbar wird. Dies ist definitiv eine der wertvollsten frühchristlichen Basiliken in Griechenland und auch heute noch dient sie den Einheimischen als aktive Kirche.
Dies ist das am besten zugängliche Kloster, wo Sie anstelle von Stufen einfach eine kleine Brücke überqueren, um den Eingang zu erreichen. Es ist ideal für Besucher, die die Stufen nicht benutzen können und dennoch ein echtes Erlebnis eines Meteora-Klosters haben möchten. Der Beginn des Klosterlebens auf dem Felsen von Agios Stephanos reicht bis ins frühe 12. Jahrhundert zurück. Hosios Antonios, in der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts, und Hosios Philotheos, der 1545 das alte kleine und elegante Catholicon, die heutige Kirche von Agios Stephanos, renovierte oder eher umgebaut hatte, wurden als Gründer erwähnt.

Das heilige Kloster von Roussanou hat den Namen des ersten wahrscheinlichen Einsiedlers erhalten, der sich auf dem Felsen niedergelassen hat. Die Hauptkathedrale wurde Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts gegründet und dreißig Jahre später dekoriert. Verglichen mit anderen Felsen, wo Klöster gebaut wurden, hat der Felsen von Roussanou eine niedrigere Erhebung, wodurch er leichter zugänglich ist. Das Kloster wurde ursprünglich von Mönchen gegründet und erlitt im Zweiten Weltkrieg schwere Schäden. Es wurde 1988 ein Kloster.
Das heilige Kloster von Varlaam ist das zweitgrößte Kloster. Es befindet sich gegenüber des Großen Meteoro-Klosters und wurde Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts von dem ausübenden Hosios Varlaam gegründet. Das elegante Kloster Catholicon wurde 1541-42 zu Ehren von Agioi Pantes von zwei Brüdern aus Ioannina, den Priestermönchen Hosioi Theophanes und Nectarios the Apsarades erbaut. Die Hauptkirche wurde 1548 dekoriert. Nach stilistischen Kriterien wird dieses prächtige Wandgemälde dem berühmten Hagiographen aus Theben, Frago Catelano, zugeschrieben.

I pre-booked my sunset tour from Kalambaka via booking dot com but also pooped into the office to check few things and the lady there was so nice and helpful. On the day, they were so busy that a small group was created for the 6 of us with Chris (the best tour guide of all!!!) and we had a great time with him. He's shown us hidden places, he knew the answer to every question we had. And he is a great driver and a awesome person! But all the people I met (and I have met quite a few other guys who work there) were so accommodating and nice! I'd highly recommend this trip and company for anyone (couples / solo travellers) and from anywhere (Kalambaka, Thessaloniki, Athens) and their website is full of useful info about the monasteries and hiking routes (that's how I planned my stay + solo hikes and in 3 days, I visited all the monestaries) if you are planning to book a trip, look no further: choose the best!

This tour was fantastic, we all learned so much about the area from our tour guide, Chris: the history (both old & recent), the mythology, geology, religion, and local greek culture. Chris is incredibly well spoken, extremely knowledgable, keeps his audience interested, and he was lots of fun! We visited a monastery or two on our own, which was wonderful, and at the end he then gave us a personal tour of a special church to understand the meanings of what was inside. The mini-van was very comfortable; had a great driver and lots of special photo opportunities along the way. The staff at Visit Meteora were very helpful and flexible when I needed to change my pick up location at the last minuted. It all went smoothly. Chris provided personal service, asking for questions, engaging us in the talk, and even shared a bit of her personal life as he is from the area. Even gave some restaurant and Greek food recommendations! We all started out as strangers on the tour, but become friends, even if for a day, by the end of our tour. I highly recommend Visit Meteora and especially Chris' tour for a comprehensive understanding of Meteora, and because he makes it fun!

Dimitri/Jim was an exceptional guide. He is originally from Kalabaka and his deep love for Meteora and the surrounding region was present in every story he shared.
