Kotor liegt im abgelegensten Teil von Boka Kotorska (Bucht von Kotor). Während es aus der illyrischen Zeit stammte, entwickelte sich Kotor im Mittelalter zu einem wichtigen Handels- und Kunstzentrum. Viele Imperien kämpften im Laufe der Jahrhunderte um die Kontrolle über die Stadt: von der autonomen Stadt des Byzantinischen Reiches über die freie Stadt im mittelalterlichen Serbien bis hin zu den venezianischen oder ungarischen Staaten, die ihre Unabhängigkeit erlangten und dann wieder unter venezianische Kontrolle gelangten, nur um besetzt zu werden von Frankreich und dann Österreich, bis Kotor schließlich Teil Jugoslawiens wurde. Beim Passieren des Sea Gate wird die Gruppe 5-10 Minuten am Square of Arms verbringen und die Geschichte über den Clock Tower und die Pillar of Shame hören.

Old city surrounded by walls for about 4 km. Like many locations overlooking the Adriatic, it was often prey to pirates. It can be reached on foot from the port and offers truly interesting sea and beaches. Strangely, the euro is in use even though they are not yet part of the EU today. Personally, I did not know how beautiful this part of the coast was.

This was a short small group walking tour. Our guide, Marja, was engaging, clearly knew her history and enjoyed her work. She was easy to find right outside the Main Gate. The tour is only one hour, as shown in the listing, so it isn't in great depth, but does give you a good feel for this very old city in this new country (Montenegro gained independence in 2006.) At the conclusion, she provided a variety of suggestions of other ways to explore and enjoy the old town area. We would have happily spent more time with Marja.
