The tour told about interesting and important buildings and the history leading up to Bulgaria becoming a part of the Soviet Onion, but it wasn’t always told in an interesting way making it a bit hard to concentrate
Nikola lead a great well structured tour with detail and humour. There was a fair amount of walking including steps at underpasses.
The tour guide seemed very knowledgeable, but it was too long and he needed to make it a little more interesting. Sometimes it just felt like he was reciting facts.
Absoluten great guide (Nicola) and well-designed tour!
A second informative tour. Learnt loads about Communism in Bulgaria.
This was one of the most thoughtful and balanced historical tours I've taken. Rather than presenting a one-sided narrative, our guide did an excellent job explaining both the ideology behind communism and the realities of how it affected everyday life in Bulgaria. The tour explored the political system, architecture, and key historical sites, while also discussing the social benefits some people remember positively alongside the restrictions, surveillance, and lack of freedoms experienced by others. What I appreciated most was that the guide encouraged reflection rather than pushing a particular viewpoint. Personal stories and local perspectives helped bring the history to life, making it clear that the communist period remains a complex and nuanced part of Bulgaria's past. Several times the discussion highlighted how different generations remember the era differently, which added valuable context. The route itself was well planned, covering major communist-era landmarks as well as lesser-known locations that I would never have found on my own. The pace was comfortable, the explanations were engaging, and the historical background was accessible even for those with limited knowledge of Eastern European history. If you're looking for a tour that goes beyond simple political commentary and instead provides a well-rounded understanding of Bulgaria's communist past, I highly recommend this experience.
He was very knowledgable and answerd questions from the group with no hesitation. I am blind and he informed me of how slippy and difficult the surface would be after the rain and made sure I was with the group when moving from place to place.
Very informative. Our guide Ivo spoke English well and was adding his comments with personal stories which made the tour engaging and special. Also he was smiling which seems a challenge for Bulgarians in the service industry here...Come rested with comfortable shoes and water because it involves a lot of walking for 3 hours.
I participated in two tours offered by this company. First, the Communist Walking Tour, which is offered for a price of €18. On the second day, I participated in the walking tour in the center of Sofia. Both tours were very good, entertaining, and educational. My guides, Nikki and Dessi, both did a great job and made the tours very enjoyable. Clear recommendation!
Great experience with a fantastic tour guide. Highly recommend. Balanced insights into Bulgarian life under communism.
