If you are in Crete this is a must to visit. We went twice as there is so much to see. You can purchase a ticket by card inside reception to avoid queues at the desk if it is busy. There is an option to add other attractions to the ticket to save money. We spent a couple of hours on the ground floor which was fascinating.
Thank you !
Visit with 2 children, free entrance for children. The visit is possible with stroller, resting points are present. Large spaces allow children to walk around. Between 11:00 and 13:00 no queue at the checkouts.
Merci !!
Place full of history, to do absolutely, preferably early in the morning during the peak season in order to avoid crowding.
Merci !
Incredible collection of artifacts well displayed with very helpful descriptions in greek and english. We learned a lot about the Minoans through the displays. Provides excellent context for the Palace of Knossos. Unfortunately there are no audio guides offered. The free english museum foldout guide was not available on the day we went - other languages were available. There is a coat / bag check service.
Thank you!!
Beautiful collection not to be missed! Beautiful pieces that reveal a lot about the history of the Crete. In addition the museum is well air conditioned.
Merci !
VISITING this museum was like coming down on Christmas morning to open your presents. Everywhere we went there were fresh wonders to see and marvel at together with a wealth of information that was impossible to fully take in. Everything became a whirl of impressions from gold jewellery to double headed axes and from marvellous frescoes including the famous dolphins fresco to colourful pottery, coffins, statues, collections of animal figures, ornate shields and mosaics. We lost ourselves here for several hours, but always keep your guard up for behaviour because staff are fiercely protective of the exhibits. Even in the short time we were there I saw at least six family groups or careless adults warned about their behaviour which staff felt threatened the exhibits. There was no apology from staff for their strong words nor should there have been. People know they are in an important museum and should behave with respect. If you are planning a visit then you should start on the ground floor where the first dozen rooms contain the Minoan collection. Move on then to the first floor covering frescoes and history before you end back on the ground floor with the sculpture collection. Private collections are presented in separate sections. There are good quality toilets in the museum together with plenty of chances to a buy a souvenir if you want one. When you exit the museum it is possible to descend slowly to the port area and explore that as well, passing shops and tavernas along the way.
Thank you so much !!
Good time, interesting museum but a bit repetitive and quick to do. Fortunately it is free for under-25s in the European Union with the combined ticket for knossos.
Thank you !!
