Die Hagia Sophia (offiziell Hagia Sophia Grand Moschee) ist eine Moschee in Istanbul, Türkei. Es war früher eine Kirche (360–1453) und ein Museum (1935–2020). Als letztes von drei Kirchengebäuden, die vom Oströmischen Reich nacheinander an dieser Stelle errichtet wurden, wurde es 537 n. Chr. fertiggestellt und wurde zum größten Innenraum der Welt und zu den ersten, die eine vollwertige Kuppel einsetzten. Sie gilt als Inbegriff byzantinischer Architektur und soll "die Geschichte der Architektur verändert" haben. Von ihrer Einweihung im Jahr 360 bis 1453 diente die Hagia Sophia in der byzantinischen Liturgietradition als Kathedrale von Konstantinopel, mit Ausnahme der Zeit 1204–1261, als die lateinischen Kreuzfahrer ihre eigene Hierarchie installierten. Nach dem Fall Konstantinopels 1453 diente sie als Moschee, deren Minarette bald darauf hinzugefügt wurden. 1935 wurde das Gelände zum Museum und 2020 zur Moschee umgewidmet.

A very interesting tour which covers all the important parts of the old town of Istanbul. Can our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and great fun. He was happy to answer any questions and made sure everyone in the group was involved. The tour was very interactive and overall a great day!
